What People Are Saying

Carole Matthews
"Another fun-filled page-turner from Brenda. Every bit as sparkling as the champagne that the bride-to-be's mother is so fond of..."
Kristin Harmel
"Deliciously entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny and fraught with disaster after hilarious disaster, Janowitz's second novel is engaging, fast-paced and thoroughly delightful. Janowitz's pitch-perfect sequel to SCOT ON THE ROCKS is a hilarious look at the not-so-holy side of holy matrimony."
Marian Keyes
"A funny, sweet romance."
Melissa Senate
"A funny, smart, true-to-life novel about being your own woman. Loved it!"

Meet the Author

A native New Yorker, Brenda Janowitz has had a flair for all things dramatic since she played the title role in her third-grade production of Really Rosie. When her grandmother asked if the experience made her want to be an actress when she grew up, Brenda responded, "An actress? No. A writer, maybe."

Brenda attended Cornell University, earning a bachelor of science in human service studies, with a concentration in race and discrimination. After graduating from Cornell, she attended Hofstra Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review and won the Law Review's writing competition.

Upon graduation from Hofstra, she went to work for the law firm Kaye Scholer LLP, where she was an associate in the intellectual property group, handling cases in the areas of trademark, antitrust, Internet and false advertising. Brenda later left Kaye Scholer to pursue a federal clerkship with the Honorable Marilyn Dolan Go, United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

Since her clerkship, Brenda has worked as a career counselor at two New York City law schools, where she published a number of articles on career-related issues in publications such as the National Law Journal and the New York Law Journal. She is hard at work on her second novel, while lecturing frequently on the publishing process and teaching creative writing at Mediabistro.com.

Brenda lives in Manhattan, where she has bravely attended three of her ex-boyfriend's weddings.

A Must Read... Great Chick Lit.

I loved 'Jack with a Twist'. It was a great sequel to 'Scot on the Rocks.' 'Jack with a Twist', is a page turner, and laugh-out-loud funny. I love how I felt like I was Brooke. 'Jack with a Twist' is about two attorneys Brooke Miller and her fiance Jack Solomon. Brooke has just landed her first big case and the opposing lawyer is her fiance Jack. Jack pulls every dirty trick in the law books and it makes Brooke think maybe he is not the man she thought he was. Besides battling in the court room they are also planning their wedding. I highly recommend this book!! It was so great that I didn't want it to end! You won't regret reading it.

Brooke is a litigating attorney. She is marrying another litigating attorney. All is going as she planned her life would. Then, she has to spar in court against her fiancé. Will her relationship hold up?
There is no way to describe how hysterical this book is. This is the epitome of chick lit. I could not wait until the end. Then, I regretted that there would be no more wacky Brooke, crazy Solomons, dimwit Jack, and doting Millers.
This story is written in a style that is similar to Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus¿, authors of The Nanny Diaries. This should end up as a movie; it is that good.
Grab a copy for yourself and your friends. This is one that you will want to read with someone, so you can laugh together.

    Great sequel!

I loved this book! A great follow up to Scot on the Rocks, but I think I liked this one even better. Brooke is now planning her wedding to Jack, and lands her first big case at her new firm. Then she discovers that Jack is the attorney on the other side, and it¿s his first big case as a partner, so he isn¿t willing to step down. Along with preparing for the case and for the wedding, she has to deal with her stiff in-laws-to-be, and her own lovable but sometimes exasperating parents. Again, the characters are well-drawn, and Brooke¿s narration often made me laugh out loud. Definitely a keeper!

This follow-up to SCOT ON THE ROCKS finds Brooke Miller working at a new, smaller law firm, while engaged to and living with Jack, the floppy-haired accent bungler from the first book. We've got some new characters, as well as the old favorites. Brooke's still not the most professional lawyer, but she's working harder now that she's stumbled into her first big case, arguing against Jack as the opposing counsel. Jack and his new underling, a real hussy, have her sweating like a ho in church. But at least she doesn't have time to worry about her non-existent wedding dress, right? Jack's parents are probably the most WASPy Jews ever with an abiding love for lobster. Brooke's mom is a champagne hound who'd never hesitate to tell you that you could stand to lose a few pounds. My mom's like that too! She becomes less insufferable as the book progresses, fortunately otherwise I'd be wondering whether they serve champagne at The Home. Brooke's dad is a lover of meat, just in a kosher, non-sexual way. Vanessa and Brooke both face the dilemma of how to be a good, considerate friend planning a wedding while the other friend's marriage is falling apart. Jack wants to make his mark in the firm as a newly made partner, and pulls some real weaselstein moves to do it. Against Brooke! He obviously wasn't worried about the state of his testicles. Anyway, I really enjoyed this book. Clashing families, her first big legal case, naivete by the boatload, and doubts about her fiance keep Brooke from becoming yet another Bridezilla. Check it out, folks!

Brooke Miller, the overly imaginative and hilarious character from SCOT ON THE ROCKS, is back and things have gotten a little hectic for her. She's dealing with the stress of planning the wedding of a lifetime with her close-to-perfect fiancé, Jack. That includes dealing with family and future in-laws (more wine, please!), finding the perfect wedding dress (oh boy!), and maintaining all the duties required of life (laundry, dishes, and grocery shopping, yuk!). But her work life, as a new attorney at Smith, Goldberg, and Reede, presents her with an amazing opportunity to take on the biggest case of her life. The only trouble occurs when Brooke realizes that the opposing attorney is none other than Jack, her own fiancé! Things get out of control until Brooke has to start to question what's more important, her career or her personal life. Who didn't love Brenda Janowitz's brilliant debut novel, SCOT ON THE ROCKS? Of course, the tricky question that every author has to face is: What next? Her second novel, JACK WITH A TWIST, is nothing less than stellar. It's a great read straight from the start and you don't need to read the first book to get into it. The dilemmas and situations that these characters get into are laugh-out-loud funny. I also love the classic Hollywood style that appears in certain situations (think like Katherine and Audrey Hepburn-hip). As I was a recent bride, the humor in JACK WITH A TWIST helped me to find the humor in my nightmare in-laws and my less than perfect wedding. In fact, I just gave this book as a gift to a good friend of mine that just got married last week. Every bride needs to be reminded that weddings are crazy! I gave this book four stars because I reserve five stars for books like Sense & Sensibility, Room with a View, etc...You get the point! What else can I say? Get this book, read it, and love it!

entertaining often amusing chick lit legal thriller

Yesterday the world looked great to Manhattan lawyer Brooke Miller. She and her fiancé following their Reese¿s Peanut Butter Cup romance were planning a wedding and her law firm has given her the first major case for her to represent in court. --- Today the world is bleak as the opposing lawyer in court is Jack not any Jack, but the Jack she knows as fiancé. Worse from the onset he makes it clear his client comes before his future wife at least in court. Jack pulls tricks, which Brooke trumps with her own dirty tricks, which Jack trumps in turn. Their families take obvious sides in a New York version of the Hatfields and McCoys as their legal dispute spills into the streets via the media. Each wonders whether the other¿s courtroom antics will show up in the bedroom as the engagement becomes shaky. --- This entertaining often amusing chick lit legal thriller is fun to follow as Jack and Brooke take turns in their courtroom cold war that shows signs of heating up in the bedroom. The story line is fast-paced mostly seen through the heroine¿s perspective as she acts and reacts to her fiancé¿s stunts with ruses of her own. Offbeat, JACK WITH A TWIST is a humorous contemporary romance in which Brooke (and to a lesser degree Jack) must decide how far she goes before she has gone too far. --- Harriet Klausner
