Overview

The legendary jackalope receives a somewhat honorable tribute on this somewhat (well, just slightly) irreverent album from R. Carlos Nakai and synthesizer player Larry M. Yañez. Fans of Nakai's solitary flute-in-the-canyon beware: the music here is percussive and funky and bristling with a garage-band chic that winks broadly at Southwest icons and the musicians' revered alter-egos, Lord Fumamoto, the legendary Chicano samurai, and Nakai's Dog Soldier. The two evocative "Japanese" pieces, "Lord Fumamoto" and "Lady Toda Awada," offer some sublime meditative moments, but the liner notes warn that the fine Lady is a trickster in disguise, so keep one ear open. The album ends with "Dog Leather," a moving lament for the final state of roadkill. This 1986 groundbreaker started what Nakai calls the SynthacousticpunkarachiNavajazz movement, and connoisseurs of the form will want to check out Jackalope's BOAT PEOPLE, a not-so-sensitive musical tribute to Columbus's invasion of the New World.

All Music Guide - MusD
This music mixes Native American melodies and ancient rhythms with hi-tech sounds. Indian flutes, trumpets, whistles, game calls, shakers, handmade drums blend with guitar and synthesizer to create a unique sound. Jackalope includes nine original selections, including the blues-influenced "Coyote Mint," and the Japanese flavored "Lord Fumamo," and the rhythmic layering of "Roadkill." This release features Nakai on flute and trumpet, Larry Yanex on synthesizer and Steve Cheseborough on guitar.
