DEADLY PLEASURES MAGAZINE Review by George Easter

I’ve been a big fan of this series since its inception with GRIFT SENSE. Swain has a natural gift for storytelling. The various scams are fascinating in their ingenuity and for the clever detection that thwarts them. And Tony Valentine
and his crew are among my favorite characters in crime fiction. He’s also published two other e-book originals – one a Jack Carpenter novel and the other a stand-alone (his first novel). I’d say that it’s almost worth buying an ereader to read them, but I’ll let you make that decision.

JACKPOT by James Swain Rating: A

This novel is set in modern-day with Tony Valentine’s son playing a prominent role as his sidekick. Tony has a score to settle. Decades before, his brother-in-law was gunned down by a gang of ruthless con men, each of whom Valentine has sworn to track down. Now, only one is left, the cold-blooded Bronco Marchese. Valentine goes to Nevada to bring Bronco to justice, while also helping the police figure out how someone is stealing hundreds of slot machine jackpots without ever touching the machines. It’s a case that only Valentine with his amazing “grift sense” can solve. Along the way, he will put his own life in peril, and risk everything that he holds dear, to bring his life-long enemy to justice.

    Good book - Right price

Always enjoyed James Swain's work and it seems he's a bit more pragmatic than most authors and publishers. This is what ebooks should cost.

    Another Swain Winner

This is an excellent book. I was very disappointed that it wasn't available in hardcopy, but now that I have a Nook, my life is easier. As a long time Valentine and Swain fan, I say Keep up the good work!

    Worth the wait!

This book was supposed to be published several years ago -- I know, because I reserved it online a few months before it came out. The publisher pulled it, and published another of Swain's thrillers instead. That made the anticipation level very high. Would this book live up to the other Tony Valentine novels in the series? Would Tony and his wayward son Gerry find common ground? Would Tony finally comes to grips with many unanswered problems from the previous novels? The answer is a resouding yes. This is one of Swain's best stories, and has the pacing of a roller-coaster. The wait was worth it.

A Visit with an Old Friend

Just finished Jackpot, the 9th book in James Swain's Tony Valentine series, and it was like a reunion of my old friends. I read the first seven Valentine book all in a row and in a 3 or 4 week span, so all of the character's nuances are fairly well embedded in my mind. Swain's character development is always superb. The more you get to know the good guys, the more you'd like them as neighbors. This story, because it deals with slot machines which are electronic and computer controlled, has more high tech elements than previous Valentine stories, which I really enjoy. Like all of Swain's books, the storyline draws you in and it's hard to put the Nook down. This is a "larger than life" story, with more twists, more challenges and more action than the earlier Valentine books. As always, the situation is resolved and life goes back to normal for Valentine and company, but with this story, the door is opened a little wider for future tales. I can hardly wait.
