Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The wonderful paintings of Jacob Lawrence fill the pages of this book, which depict life in the city. One assumes it the Harlem of his childhood. In the 1930's, Harlem was a vibrant neighborhood filled with African-American artists, musicians and business leaders depicted in this selection of paintings. There are people working in the trades building, others in offices and children in school. Home is an apartment building in a neighborhood filled with stores, kids playing on the sidewalks and street vendors offering special treats. Lawrence's story pictures received accolades from around the world and this small offering may serve to introduce young readers to this famous artist and perhaps encourage pursuit of more books about him and his work. If you want to expose your little ones to art, this book is a good choice. Other books in the series include Andy Warhol's Colors, Counting with Wayne Thibaud, Matisse Dance for Joy and Magritte's Imagination. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
Kirkus Reviews
A child's voice narrates a sequence of ten paintings by the great African-American artist, with an emphasis on rhythm and onomatopoeia. There's merit to introducing fine art to very young children, but it's unlikely that this or its companion, Magritte's Imagination (978-0-8118-6583-8), is the best vehicle. The small trim (6 1/8 X 5 3/16) forces Lawrence's large canvases into disappointingly cramped frames, in which his expressive and emotional compositions lose power and his figures distinction. This makes for an overbusy presentation that is further overwhelmed by the bold typeface and design-heavy frames and backgrounds. Templar/Candlewick's Art for Baby (2009) is a far better choice, inasmuch as it is specifically keyed to babies' neural development. (18-36 mos.)
