Overview

Jacques Helleu is the eye behind the House of Chanel's enduring image, having explored the meanings of this legendary brand in daring commercials and fabulous print ads for the past 40 years. He has given tangible, glamorous shape to the essential mystique of Chanel's perfumes, by bringing together artistic luminaries (from photographer Helmut Newton, to director Baz Luhrman, to actress Catherine Deneuve, and countless others) and masterfully guiding the creative combustion that has resulted.

This beautifully designed and lavishly illustrated volume tells the story of Helleu's vision. Stiletto magazine founder Laurence Benaim's foreword puts Helleu's grand influence into perspective, and Helleu himself presents four decades of inspiration, arranged from A to Z in themes.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
This coffee-table heavyweight, housed in its own sleek case, exists in an alternate universe where beauty is everything. Co-authored by journalist Benaim (founder & editor in chief, Stiletto), it is a grandiose tribute to Jacques Helleu, creative director of the French fashion powerhouse Chanel and a man who has "built his career on interpreting the Chanel No. 5 fantasy." Perhaps if the book stuck to Helleu's four decades of successful advertising campaigns, artistic collaborations, and brand development, its premise would not seem quite so self-indulgent. Instead, the reader must trudge through an insipid introductory biography-Helleu never takes sleeping pills, never denies himself anything, and his summer cottage was once owned by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan-to reach the apotheosis of Chanel inspiration: an illustrated alphabet spanning the perfume Allure to the silkscreened Chanel No. 5 bottles of Andy Warhol (arguably the 20th century's most sly promoter). This is just one more luxe advertisement in this list. For specialized fashion collections only.-Prudence Peiffer, Cambridge, MA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Chanel is one of the world's most recognized brands, particularly within the luxury arena. I found this volume gorgeous from its presentation to its textual consideration of a very important brilliant individual behind-the-scenes. I highly recommend this volume. I wish the house of Chanel would create a similar volume devoted to all of the Chanel haute couture collections!
