Overview

In this paradoxical blend of light and dark, Jailbird is a warm and humorous tale about the power of hope.

Neena Allen has led a tough life. Born on the reservation, raped and unjustly convicted of murdering her attacker, she survives prison - barely. When an opportunity presents itself, she doesn't hesitate to escape. Presumed dead, she stumbles into a sleepy Arkansas town where she finds refuge with a kind family and glimpses the chance for a real home, a place to belong.

But leading a double life isn't easy, especially when you fall in love with the town lawyer.

To complicate matters further, a tenacious reporter gets too close to the truth and Neena finds herself on the run again. With a manhunt under way and her newfound happiness at risk, Neena is forced to face the painful memories of her past to decide on her future. Should she fight for her new life or give up those she loves to keep them safe?

The quality of the story and the quality of the writing compares very well with John Grisham and the best of his books. Being a grizzled old guy, romance stories by female authors usually hold my interest only for 15 or 20 pages. This book was one of those rare ones that I didn't want to put down.

I only downloaded this book because it was free. I normally read mystery thrillers, so this was a little different for me. But I am glad I did. I highly recommend it. I can't wait for other books by this author!

I literally could not think about another book until I was finished reading this one. It was humorous and romantic. The storyline was somewhat predictable but an awesome read, especially for it to be a free ebook. I recommend it!

Great novel! But Neena falls in love with Charlie after 2 days?! There wasn't much flow in the plot...I didn't even know that Neena was 25 until I was 100 pages in. Overall, good book....but it couldn't have been better. :/

Love Ms Hoffman and her writing style, There are two more books by Ms. Hoffman and I've downloaded them both..I would highly recommend reading, them in order, Throwaway, Jailbird, The Ties that bind, and Suddenly a Spy.

very far fetched. Not realistic at all. I don't recommend it because of the outlandishness of the story.

Heather Hoffman tells the exciting tale of Kali Langston's (aka Neena Torres, Neena Allen, and eventually Neena Russell) escape from the Dixon Correctional Institute, and the subsequent series of events that follow that eventually end with a happily-ever-after fairytale like lifestyle. Read about Neena's legal, family, and romantic, exploits in this surprisingly, excellent story. Meet, get to know and hate some of the more abrasive characters (Todd Winslow and his father Daniel Winslow. Julie, Carlie Russell's ex-wife, and Nathan Smith, Julie's current wife). that make life difficult for Neena and her new love Charlie Russell. There is also Elena, daughter of the town Sherriff who towards the end of the story becomes a more neutral (less hostile) character. The more memorable and loveable characters include: Anjelita and Manny who are the first to befriend Neena after her escape from Dixon. Conrad, Neena's brother is always there trying to take care of Neena whenever she lets him. Cara, (Charlie's daughter) and Gabrielle (Neena's daughter) both adore Neena at first sight. Rachel Cooper is a unique character in this tale, because although she starts out as a threat to Neena and her family, towards the end of the story she becomes someone Neena feels she needs to and believes she can rely on to help protect her family and friends. This story is fast paced, very well written, and easy to follow. Lovers of romance, suspense, and adventure books will appreciate this excellent novel.
