Meet the Author

(1873 – 1954)


Issue d’une famille provinciale, ses parents lui transmettent sa passion pour la littérature. À l’âge de vingt ans, elle se marie avec Henry Gauthier-Villars, dit « Willy ». Celui-ci l’encourage à écrire et à publier ses souvenirs d’enfance : c’est ainsi qu’est écrite la série des Claudine (1900-1903) qui connaît un grand succès. Après son divorce d’avec Willy (1906), Colette signe ses oeuvres. De 1906 à 1909, elle fait l’expérience du music-hall, avant d’épouser Henry de Jouvenel en 1912 et d’entamer une carrière de journaliste au Matin. Colette publie Chéri en 1920, Le Blé en herbe (1923), Sido (1929) et La Chatte en 1933. En 1945, elle est élue membre de l’Académie Goncourt.
