Overview

“Not only do I love how Howard McEwen writes dialogue, I always get great drink ideas from him!” - Amazon Review

A man walks into a bar…his phone rings, he’s offered a job. Broke and in debt he takes it.

That’s how Jake Gibb meets his new boss Prescott Carmichael.

Jake Gibb is a man who doesn’t let a good opportunity, a craft cocktail or a nice set of legs pass him by. His boss, Prescott Carmichael, is Cincinnati’s premier investment advisor with some of the city’s best known and wealthiest names on his client list.

Together, they provide Mr. Carmichael’s clients with exceptional ‘client service’. Those services include:

finding a stolen historic relic (Spoon),
playing cupid to a couple of forlorn lovers (Love on the Rocks),
tracking down a client’s off-the-grid ex-husband who has a reputation for a hot temper (Sazerac),
holding an old man’s hand who suspects his home is haunted (Haunt),
helping an old friend finding compromising pictures of his fiance (Dirty Pictures),
trailing a client’s unfaithful wife (Gumshoe)
playing negotiator between a U.S. senator and his venally promiscuous wife (The Senator’s Wife)

Jake’s 8 is an episodic novel that spans genres — hard-boiled detective, Wodehousian comedy, classic ghost story all with a light touch

Spoon, Love on the Rocks, Sazerac, Haunt, Dirty Pictures, Gumshoe and The Senator’s Wife were previously released as part of the Prescott Carmichael Jaunts:

Jake’s 8 also contains two new chapters, Lovers in a Dangerous Time and Over-the-Rhine, that haven’t seen the light of day before now.

Really good. I loved the Jake Gibbs stories and found the way that Love in a Dangerous Time eventually tied in was ingenious. However, my mediocre rating is primarily based on the last story, Over-the-Rhine. It was inconsistent with the other Jake Gibbs stories. It took place in a pre-WWII era whereas the others took place in a more modern time. The story itself was good, it just should have been done as a different character.

    SUPERB

Absolutely wonderful book. I simply could not put this down. This is not one entire story, but a series of shorts that continue after each other. I hope he has more coming and SOON
