Overview

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Lane Smith trades stinky cheese for fantastic fruit with his black-and-white illustrations for Roald Dahl's classic 1961 novel, James and the Giant Peach. The reissue is timed to coincide with the release of the Disney animated motion picture based on Smith's suitably subversive visual interpretation.
Children's Literature
The 2001 reissue of this fantasy classic features delightful Quentin Blake illustrations. Liberally sprinkled throughout the brief chapters, the quirky, cartoonish drawings illuminate the daring action. James is the lonely, abused orphan victim in the hands of dreadful Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker until an old man emerges from the garden bushes with a bag of tiny green things. The strange things spill into the earth under the old peach tree. Quickly the story moves into adventure mode when a giant peach grows mysteriously to the size of a house. James is inside the peach with his insect companions. They deal with frothing sharks, captive seagulls and angry cloudmen. James problem-solves, while the mutated insects play the roles expected of a cast of characters on a sinking ship. Incredible remarks are casually made by James such as, "Rainbow-paint dries very quick and very hard," while the insects speak factually about the number of spots on ladybugs and earthworms swallowing soil. It is the craziest of fantasies wrapped tightly in a chapter book perfect for a first grade read-aloud or for the young, independent reader. The book is not dated after 40 years. In the end, the giant peach participants all become rich and successful in America. 2001(orig. 1961), Puffin Books, $5.99. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Jacki Vawter
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-The classic children's book by Roald Dahl ( Knopf, 1961) receives royal treatment in this terrific audiobook production. James Henry Trotter, a poor orphan, is being raised by two horrible aunts. Magic crystals change his humdrum existence, and soon he is off on a great adventure on a giant peach with new friends who are, to say the least, unique. There are sharks, seagulls, and irate cloud people to add interest along the way and, of course, Dahl's irreverent poetry. The story has always been a crowd-pleaser, and Jeremy Irons does more than read the story-he performs it. Each character has a unique voice, aptly suiting each personality, and Irons tells the story with humor and energy. Fans of Dahl will not be disappointed in this briskly paced tale that is a delight from beginning to end.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
This newly illustrated edition of an avowed children's favorite has all the makings of a classic match-up: Milne had Shepard, Carroll had Tenniel, and now Dahl has Smith. Yes, there is a movie tied in to all of this, but more importantly, author and illustrator were made for each other, and it's of little consequence that it took almost 35 years for them to meet.

Meet the Author

Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl (1916-1990) is one of the most beloved storytellers of all time. He wrote many award-winning books for children, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda.

Biography

"I have never met a boy who so persistently writes the exact opposite of what he means," a teacher once wrote in the young Roald Dahl's report card. "He seems incapable of marshaling his thoughts on paper." From such inauspicious beginnings emerged an immensely successful author whom The Evening Standard would one day dub "one of the greatest children's writers of all time."

Dahl may have been an unenthusiastic student, but he loved adventure stories, and when he finished school he went out into the world to have some adventures of his own. He went abroad as a representative of the Shell corporation in Dar-es-Salaam, and then served in World War II as a pilot in the Royal Air Force. After the war, Dahl began his writing career in earnest, publishing two well-received collections of short stories for adults, along with one flop of a novel.

The short stories, full of tension and subtle psychological horror, didn't seem to presage a children's author. Malcolm Bradbury wrote in The New York Times Book Review, "[Dahl's] characters are usually ignoble: he knows the dog beneath the skin, or works hard to find it." Yet this talent for finding, and exposing, the nastier sides of grown-up behavior served him well in writing for children. As Dahl put it, "Writing is all propaganda, in a sense. You can get at greediness and selfishness by making them look ridiculous. The greatest attribute of a human being is kindness, and all the other qualities like bravery and perseverance are secondary to that."

In 1953, Dahl married the actress Patricia Neal; two of his early children's books, James and the Giant Peach (1961) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) grew out of the bedtime stories he made up for their children. Elaine Moss, writing in the Times, called the latter "the funniest children's book I have read in years; not just funny but shot through with a zany pathos which touches the young heart." Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a colossal hit. A film version starring Gene Wilder was released in 1971 (as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), while James and the Giant Peach was made into a movie in 1996.

Dahl followed his initial successes with a string of bestsellers, including Danny, the Champion of the World, The Twits, The BFG, The Witches and Matilda. Some adults objected to the books' violence -- unpleasant characters (like James’s Aunts Sponge and Spiker) tend to get bumped off in grotesque and inventive ways -- but Dahl defended his stories as part of a tradition of gruesome fairy tales in which mean people get what they deserve. "These tales are pretty rough, but the violence is confined to a magical time and place," he said, adding that children like violent stories as long as they're "tied to fantasy and humor." By the time of his death in 1990, Dahl's mischievous wit had captivated so many readers that The Times called him "one of the most widely read and influential writers of our generation."

Good To Know

When Dahl was in school, he and his schoolmates occasionally served as new-product testers for the Cadbury chocolate company. Dahl used to dream of working in a chocolate manufacturer's inventing room. He wrote in his autobiography, "I have no doubt at all that, 35 years later, when I was looking for a plot for my second book for children, I remembered those little cardboard boxes and the newly invented chocolates inside them, and I began to write a book called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Dahl's first book for children, The Gremlins (1943), was a story about the mythical creatures that sabotaged British planes. (Dahl claimed for most of his life that he had coined the term "gremlins," but it had been in use by members of the Royal Air Force for years.) Walt Disney planned to use it as the basis for a movie, but the project was scrapped, and only 5,000 copies of the book were ever printed.

    This Book is Fun!

From Elizabeth (7 years old) - I think James and the Giant Peach is funny and I like the characters and what they do. All of the students in my classroom had read the book and I wanted to try it. When I tried it, it was really good.

A message from Valarie at "Jump into a Book"

Who can believe that its been half a century since James Trotter walked up to a giant peach, stepped inside and shared a magnificent adventure with a grasshopper, spider, ladybug, centipede and an earth worm. Together they weathered many a storm and changed their fortune by working together. This story is a classic that has consistently stayed on the bookshelves of my home and is a story I have shared with all of my children. Roald Dahl put together a masterpiece with the creation of this story, and I hope my children pass it along with as much fondness as I have to them.

A very enjoyable book, I highly recomend it

James and the giant peach by roald dahl is a story about a little boy whos parents died when he was a little boy, so then he moved in with his two absolutly evil aunts who were horrifingly ugly, and they thought they were pretty :) then james finds some magic beans and he drops them on to the ground into the roots of the old peach tree, then the tree bloomed a peach and then the peach started to grow, soon enough it was as big as a house. Then he finds some new friends that you might not expect. i highly recomend this book because it was very facsinating and also it tought me that if you have a positive look on a disaster, then things won't seem so bad. This book also tought me that even the most of unlucky situations can be fixed if you beleive they can.

My Book Review: The book James and the Giant Peach was a good book it gave lots of detail in the story. The book had a very uncommon idea but it was a good book the way he wrote it. I really liked the genre fiction is my favorite and that was what the genre was in this book. The story didn't talk about the characters much so I didn't really know what he looked like. He also didn't talk about the setting I didn't feel what it was like living in his room. They made a movie about the book and I thought it was much better than the book.

Strongly Recommended ! - Great Read for Young Adults !

James and the Giant Peach, is a story of sadness, magic, and a lot of hope. It's the story of a small boy James and his horrible life living with his wicked aunts until one day a little magic happens, and his whole life is changed, FOREVER. This book shows how a little magic can go a long way, and how in the end things usually work out in ways you can't imagine. James parents are dead, and not only do his to acts yell at him in his care, but beat him, and make sure he feels worthless. But James knows there's more out there to see, and hopes of someday escaping. He's forced to chop firewood one day and finds a strange man there, but he's not afraid. The man gives him a bag filled with more magic one can explain, James is unaware that this magic, could take him halfway across the world, with sights of cloud men, sharks, and giant creatures but he's soon to find out. When all this magic is held in one bag, in James' tiny hands, he watches all the magic slip away from him by one mistake. His life is ruined. Or so he thought? With one dose of magic to an unfertile peach tree, a peach begins to grow. Not only is this peach used for transportation for James in the future but home to many friends with hopes of adventure. And that's exactly what they get.

James and the Giant Peach is one of my childhood favorites. I love all of Roald Dahl's books and highly recommend them as books that all children should read. I think they definitely qualify as books that can capture even "reluctant readers." This edition of the book is a favorite - I love the cover art!

    What a Weird kid's book

    I bought this book.

Dahl's name on a book, to me, is synonymous with a wild ride. James and the Giant Peach is quite possibly his craziest book (that I've read) so far.

Dahl's penchant for abused children facing down a cruel world sets the scene, with James Henry Trotter (whose parents were gobbled up by a rhinoceros) living a lonely, miserable life in the cruel care of his aunts Spiker and Sponge (who are, of course, truly horrible people, even for Dahl's worlds). Then one day a strange man appears and gives James magical green things, telling him to brew them into a tea and drink them and marvelous things will happen.

Parents will be close to screaming at this point, both because of the blatant abuse of the lead character and the danger of eating things strangers (and this man is indeed VERY strange) offer. Consider it an opportunity to have a talk or two about the serious subjects with your kids.

James accidentally trips and loses the green magical things, which burrow into the ground and instead work their magic on the few occupants of the horrible aunts' pitiful garden. The strange man was right, though, and the peach tree somehow surviving in such a horrible place, grows a gigantic peach that serves as boat, meal and almost a secondary character in James' voyage to freedom.

James and the Giant Peach is quite "out there". In fact between giant bugs, sheer strangeness and outlandish extremism (and cloud people) James and the Giant Peach could fit into the bizarro genre, if it was commonly aimed at children readers.

There is some issue with language ("ass" is used several times) and the level of abuse James suffers that makes this book not for all families. But the underlying theme is one of taking your life into your own hands and choosing your own actions rather than letting the actions of others force you into things.

Dahl's books might be of particular value to families and children struggling to cope with real life abuse and pain, as every story I've read so far has pit a mostly helpless child against forces entirely out of their control, and yet through thoughtfulness and great-heartedness wonderful things come to those who choose to live beyond the harshness of the world. Like many children found solace in the Harry Potter series after the death of a parent, some might also find solace and aid in coping from Dahl's dark, but triumphant tales of recovery.

A Modern Classic that Keeps on Giving

We purchased this book for our eldest son when he was young. He loved it. Now we purchased this book along with the well made dvd for his young son, our grandson, for Christmas. Roald Dahl is a very good author of childrens' books. I found as a high school English teacher that providing a well made video or dvd that stuck to the written book and the author's intent was a good way to get my students to read. The video/movie/dvd always gave us a jumping off point to discuss the books that we read. In the future I intend to inhance my grandson's reading experience with the accompanying dvd or video. By the way, a well written book is always better than the movie. But then you who are reading my review already know this. I would recommend this book and its siblings by Roald Dahl to any parent or grandparent who loves to share his, her, or their love of reading with their child or grandchild. Reading to and with your children is a good way to continue the bond that begins at birth. My sons are now ages 36 and 29. We still exchange, borrow, and recommend books to each other. At Christmas and birthdays we always give Barnes & Noble gift certificates to each other. Besides this book and dvd gift to our grandson, we also gave him a big Barnes and Noble gift card. A person can never have too many books.

    Get set! Go!

A Young boy named James in "James and the Giant Peach" wanted his mean aunts to change and be nice. He wanted to live like a normal kid. He thought that he was being treated unfairly by them. But his aunts were prone to making James do all of the work. They worked him like their slave, and yelled at him all the time. So one day he noticed a Giant Peach that he had worked hard to grow. There was a hole in the side of it, so he ventured in to check it out. And inside was a bunch of enlarged insects. On they went; James and the enlarged insects took an adventure inside the Giant peach, and away from his horrible Aunts.

I would recommend this book, because once I started it was not hard to concentrate. While reading this book you can't wait to turn the page and see what's next, because it has focus points. Although it is a very good book in many views, I would not recommend it to people that like mystery's or romance tales. But if I was reading it for the first time I would think that it was more of a kid's book. I hope that this encourages more people to read the book and not just the cover.

    The best book!

Hi This book is written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Lane Smith. I am enjoying this book. The sad part is in the begining because James' parents die and he moves in with his two aunt's. The book is sad, but in my mind I know that James is a brave boy. I recommend this book to children.

    Pretty... GOOD!

I like this book because it gives you a realistic feeling... like you can understand it, know what really is going on in the story, and of course, at the same time, enjoy listening or reading it. This book is full of 'Fun Fantasy' and a journey for you to drag along with you all the time!
