Meet the Author

James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age 23, Herriot qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College, and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of 50. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight.

Good for tweens who are animal lovers

I bought this for my 9 year old daughter who had tried to read "All Things Great and Small" but found the words too hard. This is much more on her level but some of the words still tend to be difficult as some of the dialect is Scottish. We enjoy reading this together before she goes to bed and each story so far has been interesting for the both of us. The pictures that accompany the story are well done and make it come to life even more. I would definitely buy this again.

    Highly recommended

This was my children's favorite bedtime story book when they were toddlers, not only because of the great stories, but also because of the beautiful illustrations. As they grew older and learned to read, this then became one of their favorite books to read by themselves. Since then I have given this book as a baby gift to everyone I know who's starting a new family; it's a gift that keeps on giving over many years.

    Mesmerizes the recipient!

Ordered this online based on reviews alone and am thrilled!!! This was a birthday gift for a 5 year old who is not familiar with the TV or adult version of James Herriot, but story time results demonstrate that those are definitely not prerequisites -- this book results in some of the best parent-child story hours ever! The illustrations on each page are wonderful, and the accompanying text is just right - not too heavy or long (per page) but also not too short and simple. The lure of James Herriot's stories aside, this is the type of next-level read-aloud story I've been looking for, with a generous helping of lovely illustrations and text that is more advanced but not to the point of a young one tuning out. The narrative is clear, but without being dumbed-down, so it's also quite enjoyable for a parent (need to dust off my own copies of Herriot's work!). Would highly recommend and would give to others as a gift. This book could be enjoyable for quite an age range, I think.

    A reviewer

An All Time Favorite of a family that reads a lot! Never disappoints. So sweet and poignant. We loved how the author takes each story just a little farther than most
