QUEST Muscular Dsytrophy AssociationDiane Parker is a caring, creative teacher in Hawaii who enjoys new challenges. A few years ago, the challenge that entered her classroom was Jamie, a kindergartner with spinal muscular atrophy. Parker had never before taught a child with severe physical disability, and she soon learned that Jamie was special in many other ways, including her above-average intellect.
This poignant story depicts how Jamie helped her classmates learn, not only math and reading, but about sharing, imagination and perseverance. Parker also relates how she and her family grew closer to Jamie's family, with the parents playing an important role in developing Jamie's reading skills, and the teacher constantly alert to ways to help Jamie express herself and take part in group activities.
