Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Valerie O. Patterson
Superstar Jamie Foxx, born Eric Bishop in Texas in 1967, got his start in the entertainment world as a comedian. In the 1990s he starred in two television series, In Living Color and The Jamie Foxx Show. Director Oliver Stone, in Any Given Sunday, a drama about pro football, gave him his first serious movie role in 1999. In 2004 he starred in four successful movies, including Ray, the story of gifted singer Ray Charles. For his portrayal of the life of Ray Charles, Foxx won an Oscar for Best Actor. Also in 2004 he signed a record deal and was nominated for a Grammy award. He credits his success to his grandmother, Estelle Talley, who raised him and adopted him. She died in October 2004, just four months before Jamie Foxx won his Oscar. He honored her at the Academy Awards, saying she was his "first acting teacher." Photographs and text boxes add texture to this accessible introduction to a talented, popular entertainer. A time line, glossary, and list of additional resources also are included. Other biographies in the "Today's Super Stars" series include Usher and Cameron Diaz.
