The Theater of Dreams and Disappointment

Before reviewing this book, realize that it will offend some people based on its images of manipulated sex organs, simulated sex, full frontal nudity of women and men, references to sexual violence, and adult nudes in classic ¿religious¿ poses. The photographer¿s purpose is to satirize and critique certain forms of phoniness, so I found the works acceptable . . . but their raw passion will overwhelm some who will find them too strong. Jan Saudek creates dreamscapes from his imagination to express his feelings and yearnings. When his emotions are more quiescent, he is capable of extraordinary images that will profoundly move you in ways you will be happy about. Where he emotions rage, you will also feel moved . . . but often in ways that won¿t feel so comfortable. In both cases, his work will affect you profoundly. Unlike many books of nude subjects, this one moves to message rather than to form. So many of his subjects are obese, overdone, and not particularly attractive. His most frequent themes involve connection and loneliness, pretense and naturalness (done in a series of parallel photographs of the same models clothed and unclothed in the same or similar poses), and the unyielding presence of time in our lives. The book begins with a fine essay by Dr. Christiane Frick that I recommend to you. She explains very well how Mr. Saudek¿s work fits in with the ¿tableau vivant¿ and ¿pose plastique¿ styles of photography. The text and the rest of the book are done in English, German, and French. My favorites included a lot of his early work. The newest work is usually too flamboyant for my taste. My favorites included in their order of appearance in the volume: My Father, 1975; Love Story, 1974; Hey, Joe, 1959; The River, 1962; Last Summer¿s Sweet Memories, 1974; Marie no. 1, 1974; Maid¿s Morning, 1963; Marie no. 142, 1972; What¿s-her-name Girl, 1973; I Look Through My Window, 1984; Susanne, 1978; Tell Me, Mirror, 1978; My Mother, 1979; Narcissist, 1983; Pieta, 1990; Portrait of My Friend Hannelore, 1997; Ida, 1990; Sword, 1996; and Petra, 1996. Looking at this book made me think about how important it is to be more self-aware, and to see oneself critically as one acts. Otherwise, part of life will become as phony as some of these images. Donald Mitchell, co-author of The 2,000 Percent Solution and The Irresistible Growth Enterprise
