Leos Janácek's extraordinary song cycle, The Diary of One Who Disappeared, the earthy story of a farmer's son who runs off with a Gypsy woman, is one of the most haunting and compelling works in the entire repertory of 20th-century song. And tenor Ian Bostridge accompanied by pianist Thomas Adès give us an interpretation that is not only gripping and deeply felt but at times almost unbearably intense. At first one might think that Bostridge's sweet, heady tone is not really suited to this work -- it is usually sung by more muscular voices -- but he brings an innocent optimism to it that is thoroughly convincing. And how passionately he throws himself into the part! Bostridge seizes upon the music's rhythmic energy to portray a character whose passions run far deeper than they initially appear, and Adès who, like Britten, is primarily a composer matches Bostridge's fervor and rhythmic drive, playing his part with an orchestral richness that outclasses all rivals. Bostridge has made some stunning recordings with pianist Julius Drake, a fine accompanist, but one prays that this is just the first of many collaborations with Adès. The program also includes performances of a set of Moravian folk songs and other brief piano solos, as well as earlier versions of two songs from The Diary. Simply put, this is one of the most exciting vocal recordings to come along in many a year. Do not miss it.

A superb version, with Ian Bostridge an inspired soloist and with Ruby Philogene sensuously rich­toned as the gypsy seductress.... Bostridge seems ideally suited to this work, and though the high tessitura of the writing is daunting for any tenor, he seems totally untroubled.
