Emma

1996 Talkies Award • Best Abridgement
Read by Juliet Stevenson, 1996 Talkies “Reader of the Year” Award-Winner

Arrogant, self-willed and egotistical, Emma is Jane Austen's most unusual heroine. Her interfering ways and inveterate matchmaking are at once shocking and comic. She is 'handsome, clever and rich' and has 'a disposition to think too well of herself'. When she decides to introduce the humble Harriet Smith to the delights of genteel society and to find her a suitable husband, she precipitates herself and her immediate circle into a web of misunderstanding and intrigue, from which no-one emerges unchanged.

Music: Beethoven, Cramer, Purvis

Mansfield Park

At the tender age of ten, Fanny Price is 'adopted' by her rich relations and is removed from the povorty of her home in Portsmouth to the opulence of Mansfield Park. The transplantation is not a happy one. Dependent, neglected and forgotten, Fanny struggles to come to terms with her new life until, tested almost to the limits of endurance, she assumes her rightful role...

Music: Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Weber

Northanger Abbey

When Catherine Morland, a country clergyman's daughter, is invited to spend a season in Bath with the fashionable high society, little does she imagine the delights and perils that await her. Captivated and disconcerted by what she finds, and introduced to thejoys of "Gothic novels" by her new friend, Isabella, Catherine longs for mystery and romance. When she is invited to stay with the beguiling Henry Tilney and his family at Northanger Abbey, she expects mystery and intrigue at every turn. However, the truth turns out to be even stranger than fiction...

Music: Beethoven, Mozart

The Biography

Who was the person behind Emma, Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice and the other unforgettable novels of Regency England? She comes alive in this perceptive biography - the classic account by Elizabeth Jenkins - showing the writer to be a human being with all her own interests, hopes and foibles.

The classic biography for people to find out more about the writer herself.

Music: Haydn piano music

Meet the Author

Jane Austen
Jane Austen's delightful, carefully wrought novels of manners remain surprisingly relevant, nearly 200 years after they were first published. Her novels -- Pride and Prejudice and Emma among them -- are those rare books that offer us a glimpse at the mores of a specific period while addressing the complexities of love, honor, and responsibility that still intrigue us today.

Biography

In 1801, George Austen retired from the clergy, and Jane, Cassandra, and their parents took up residence in Bath, a fashionable town Jane liked far less than her native village. Jane seems to have written little during this period. When Mr. Austen died in 1805, the three women, Mrs. Austen and her daughters, moved first to Southampton and then, partly subsidized by Jane's brothers, occupied a house in Chawton, a village not unlike Jane's first home. There she began to work on writing and pursued publishing once more, leading to the anonymous publication of Sense and Sensibility in 1811 and Pride and Prejudice in 1813, to modestly good reviews.

Known for her cheerful, modest, and witty character, Jane Austen had a busy family and social life, but as far as we know very little direct romantic experience. There were early flirtations, a quickly retracted agreement to marry the wealthy brother of a friend, and a rumored short-lived attachment -- while she was traveling -- that has not been verified. Her last years were quiet and devoted to family, friends, and writing her final novels. In 1817 she had to interrupt work on her last and unfinished novel, Sanditon, because she fell ill. She died on July 18, 1817, in Winchester, where she had been taken for medical treatment. After her death, her novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published, together with a biographical notice, due to the efforts of her brother Henry. Austen is buried in Winchester Cathedral.

    Very Good

Can't believe I got 7 Jane Austen books for this cheap. I love all of her works, but Pride and Prejudice is my favorite.

Each book has its own link in the table of contents.

    Good

There are so many pages!!! Wow. But the novels had links in the table of contents. Also, the language of the novels were not "edited" or changed to current language, which I found to my liking. Really good collection and I would recommend it. Just brace yourself!;) LOVE JANE AUSTEN BOOKS!!!:D

Links work and is formatted well

I've seen reviews that say the links do not work and the text is formatted incorrectly. I found when I adjusted the font size everything was fine. I had no problems with the links either. I'm glad to see the entire collection in one place and I do have to admit-I've never read one of her books. I am happy with this selection.

    ABRIDGED

This CD set is abridged, except for the "The Watsons." I was very disappointed, because this is not mentioned on the web page. Next time I will do more research before purchasing.

    A True Treasure Trove

Any fan of Jane Austen's work will love to have this volume in their collection. To read them all for the first time, second, or in some cases tenth or twelfth, is to take a trip back in time and space to an era that is brilliantly drawn with multi-dimensional characters we feel we know. The stories and pages come to life and deliver an unforgettable experience.

    No disappointment

Cost me almost nothing and have had no problem being able to read all the books.
Never a bad choice to read Austen, in any form. She easily captures the women and men of her time and her characters are everything from ridiculous and amusing to strong and sophisticated.

    Peerless

I've read the usual 6 published works of Jane Austen many times, but this is the first time I've had a chance to see her "Juvenilia".

    Thanks for making this possible!
