Overview

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." --Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

There was never a more astute chronicler of the hits and near-misses of love than Jane Austen. Now, she helps readers discover their inner heroines and get the guy in this witty book of romance and dating strategies.

Utilizing wisdom inspired by Jane Austen's novels, from Sense and Sensibility to Pride and Prejudice and beyond, author Lauren Henderson creates an indispensable guide for navigating the all-too-mystifying dating scene. Harnessing the triumphs and pitfalls of Austen's classic characters, Henderson shows how qualities like honesty, self-awareness, and forthrightness always win the right man--and still let you respect yourself in the morning.

A completely new and amusing approach to dating, Jane Austen's Guide to Dating includes insightful personality quizzes that reveal which Jane Austen character you--and your mate--most resemble. Armed with this knowledge, you can learn what to do if you're a Lizzie, but the object of your affection is a Bingley. You can even find out how to gain the clearheadedness and confidence that Anne Elliot had and almost lost in Persuasion.

Full of wit and truly useful advice that has stood the test of time, Jane Austen's Guide to Dating will help readers overcome the nonsense and find the sense (and sensibility) to succeed in a lasting relationship. Fans of Jane Austen and newcomers alike will delight in this fun, fresh, and audacious guide.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Always a popular topic, true love is the focus of many self-help books coming out the next two months. Novelist Henderson (My Lurid Past) puts a twist on the usual advice by using characters from Jane Austen's novels as case studies. Her "Ten Principles of Dating" include don't fall for superficial qualities, be prepared to wait for the right person to come along, and reprimand your love if he needs it. The personality quizzes at the end, which reveal which Austen character the reader and her intended mate most resemble, are fun and will be particularly appealing. Austen fans will derive the most pleasure from this book, but others will find more relevant love advice elsewhere. Recommended for larger libraries and literary communities. In this revision of her 1987 best seller, Kent, a popular talk-show guest, takes a different tack, offering women step-by-step advice on how to dress their age and body type, where to meet the best men, how to enhance and maintain the right relationship, and when to move in. She suggests putting as much time and thought into "shopping" for a mate as one does in shopping for an outfit for a special occasion-a process that entails interviewing him to assess his values and goals, interpersonal relations, and attitude toward money. This is strategic planning to be sure, but the book lacks deeper insights. It will, however, generate demand owing to Kent's scheduled media appearances. For most public libraries.Warren, psychologist and creator of the successful online matchmaker eHarmony.com, has assembled a guide based on his research and insights from the 2500 successful marriages fostered by the web site. Twenty-nine key personal dimensions, he claims, can be indicative of compatibility between two people; readers should focus on improving and knowing themselves and being aware of the red flags that forecast trouble in a relationship. While there's a Christian undertone now and then, this would probably not offend those from other faiths or the nonreligious. For larger relationship collections. Substantive Information For Dating Women

This book is one of the best dating books I've ever read! My only regret is that I was not able to read this book when I was younger.

Great book but I expected no less

Jane has brought out all the information about dating and spead it out in this book to give you the guidelines when going out into the dating world. This is one book I'm even going to give my daughter one day to help her as she matures and turns out into the world looking for love.

    Not bad

Get this book if you are single. It can't hurt and may help. Get 'How to Date Your Wife' by Stan Cronin if you are married and still want a relationship with your spouse.

    A guide that actually works!

I loved Jane Austen's Guide to Dating. It's a tribute to Jane Austen as well as being a dating guide and it uses Austen's characters as a basis to point out various desirable or less useful characteristics in someone you're dating - which is fun and useful. Jane Austen was one of the most acute observers of human nature there's ever been - I expect that's why her novels sell so well and are so funny - and human nature hasn't changed noticeably in the last 200 years. If you're going to take examples from literature, it's a great idea to use the best! What Lauren Henderson does is use the characteristics Austen noticed that are common to us all (i.e. most of the people you'll date!) to point out the pitfalls to avoid, and what it's sensible to do in any given dating situation. I didn't get the impression that we're expected to behave in the same way as an Austen character, however - that would be daft. She updates the scenarios to fit the 21st century, so it's a very topical, as well as highly entertaining, book. Henderson's advice is sheer common sense, which I find essential in relationships. Like most people, I don't always see the traps I'm about to fall into, and this flags them cleverly and amusingly. It's quite a subtle book, and I liked the way the various dating problems have different solutions geared to the person encountering the problem. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and would recommend it highly. I'm pretty sure it'll work. Off to test it now!
