When I was a girl, I really loved Edgar Rice Burroughs.
JANE CARVER OF WAAR updates the Burroughs aesthetic for the 21st century. Instead of a handsome man swept off to an alien world, we have a biker chick in the same situation. This leads to some fascinating gender play in the book; it's a lot of fun, and spices up the narrative. And the plotline moves like gangbusters; I was continually delighted and kept off balance by the sheer inventiveness Nathan Long displays.
It's a fun, fun read. I'm looking forward to the sequel, SWORDS OF WAAR.

Jane Carver is John McClane in a Die Hard meets Avatar meets Princess Bride mash up of a novel. The characters are engaging and the story is wonderfully fast paced. A thoroughly wonderful and exciting read you'll not want to put down for anything. 5 stars -The Founding Fields

Swashbuckling adventure. Tough biker chick mysteriously transported to an alien world. I laughed out loud at some of Jane's crazy adventures. I will be looking for more from Nathan Long and Nightshade Books!

When I first began to read the book I was thinking, "oh just another tough chick book." And yes it is; however, the story was done in such a way as to make the reader like Jane and cheer for her as she travels through the world of Waar, I was a bit disappointed that she had to return home and am looking forward to the sequel which was supposed to be out the 1st of November.
I most enjoyed how the author takes us through and adventure that places our protagonist and her buddies in varying predicaments that all lead to under covering a nefarious plot to steal control. Classic royalty battles mixed in with a bit of love here and there and a whole lot of butt kicking with remental tones of Steam Punk throughout. The only thing it lacked was a Zombie attack.
Read the book, its worth your time. Oh and for those that don't like harsh language, well Jane is a biker babe. You've been warned.

This book was funny as heck! The protagonist, Jane Carver is a rough, tough biker chick that gets sent to another world along the lines of Burrough's Carter. She will have you laughing as she makes her way through some tough situations. Very enjoyable!

Swashbuckling adventure, gladiators, kidnapped princess, evil warlord, loyal friends, strange customs, and a sexy amazon heroine. What more could you ask for? Fast paced story (NOT FOR KIDS) kept me entertained throughout. Looking forward to the sequel

Take John Carter, give him a sex change and an attitude adjustment and you have Jane. She a brash, refreshing, crude, uncultured, smart (at least street smart), liberated, liberated biker. I think I might have known her in High School.
If Edgar had been writing now instead of a hundred years ago, I would not be surprised if this is exactly what he would be writing.
There are some bumps in the road: a few small ways that the characters don't quite ring true and a few missing words and letters are the worst of it. If you're willing to breathe when breath falls short, and forgive the other small disabilites, you may find this outrageous tail to be an engrossing read.
It's not for the faint of heart, nor is it fainthearted. Worth the read.

This book is an adventure. It is crude in places. There is offensive language if one is easily offended. It is also amusing, funny at times, and if you like scifi it will keep your interest. Not sure I will read the sequel, but will look for other books by the author.

This book is just fine if you don't take it too seriously, and don't think it's a remake or even spoof of a John Carter adventure. It actually takes place after John Carter has been dead and gone for many decades. There is lots of action, fight scenes, and sexual references. For you prudes out there, this book would be a rated R movie due to nudity, sex scenes (not lengthy or super graphic scenes), and foul language. The author presents some intelligent moral debates about gender equality, slavery, and justice. I enjoyed this book. It was a fun, easy read. Plus, it was free!

Loved this story... a bit much with some of the more colorful language, but I think it is well crafted and action packed adventure written in the first person.

Long begins by telling the reader that this story comes from a woman who has sent it to him on a recording, drawing the reader into the possibility that the woman in question may actually have experienced the story about to be told.
Jane Carver is a large woman, strong and determined. She finds herself the accidental perpetrator of a killing, and tries to run, fleeing into the hills and finally crawling into a cave where there is a strange glowing light. Reaching out to it...
Jane awakens to find herself transported to another planet, where she encounters many challenging situations and meets varied intriguing personalities. Her strength and agility is multiplied because of the lighter gravitational pull, and she finds herself to be both hero and villain to the different peoples of this foreign world.
My version is and ebook, and many of these have extensive editorial mistakes, but this one (as I recall) had very few, maybe one or two. Long's skill is evident, and leaves me curious for the rest of the books in the series.

I picked this on a whim and was pleased to find that it was a fast, light read. Not much substance but it makes for a entertainment on a flight or layover.

Jane Carter of Waar is a fast paced, imaginative, and rollicking adventure that would do the old masters of the genre proud. Jane is a wonderfully coarse heroine who has you behind her 100 percent from the very start. The writing is tight with great descriptions, visuals, and twists, with a surprising amount of insight. Fans of Burroughs and pulp adventure writers would be well-served by taking a trip with Jane to Waar.

Overview
Jane Carver is nobody's idea of a space princess.
A hard-ridin', hard-lovin' biker chick and ex-Airborne Ranger, Jane is as surprised as anyone else when, on the run from the law, she ducks into the wrong cave at the wrong time-and wakes up butt-naked on an exotic alien planet light-years away from everything she's ever known.
Waar is a savage world of four-armed ...
