Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Parents and schoolchildren haunted by the annual science fair have found a friend in Janice VanCleave. This entrée in her popular "A+ series" begins with a review of the science fair process, followed by 35 projects grouped within general topics such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science and physics. The first portion of each chapter describes a demonstration project, such as instructions for determining the specific gravity of a mineral. These sections are well supported with line diagrams and charts as appropriate. Explanations of the phenomena demonstrated delve a little further into the science. After this section, the author suggests new approaches to enlarge upon the project, followed by "Design Your Own Experiment" hints for those students beyond the demonstration stage. Finally, there are several questions labeled "Get the Facts" which prompts to investigate related areas through additional reading to help bolster students' understanding of the topic at hand. Appendices include explanations of some basic statistical concepts, a glossary and index. The strength of this book is the author's ability to clearly explain scientific concepts in short, digestible sections while providing stimulating activities for science fair participants at all levels. 2003, Wiley, Ages 10 to 16.
