Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Activities about the solar system focus on 20 specific topics, with the intention of generating further interest and experimentation. Each topic is presented as a problem, such as--what did people in the past think the universe looked like? Materials and a procedure to answer the question are outlined. Additional information follows that elaborates on the topic. The materials used are readily available and some are especially creative. Clever props such as a glass bowl to explore the concept of the celestial dome and an umbrella to demonstrate the stars rotating around the North Star are used. The subjects presented include Mercury's atmosphere, the shape of planetary orbits, the relative size of planets, and the rings of Saturn and comets. The instructions are easy to follow with helpful illustrations. 2000, John Wiley & Sons, Ages 8 to 12, $10.95. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Twenty interesting (but not mind-boggling) experiments. A brief but informative introduction describes the book's organization and provides suggestions for presenting a project in a science fair. Each chapter establishes a problem to be explored, lists materials needed (all easily available), details a step-by-step procedure with adequate attention to safety, explains the results, and proposes ways to expand the experiment. "Check It Out!" segments ask related questions and refer interested readers to other titles. There are simple but useful line diagrams and charts. While several of the activities are similar to those included in Janice VanCleave's Astronomy for Every Kid (Wiley, 1991), the ideas for extending the experiments and the emphasis on turning the results into science-fair projects are welcome and valuable.-Elaine Fort Weischedel, Franklin Public Library, MA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
