His installations, whether temporary or semi-permanent, set off a trail of associations and are a process of "making strange." A potent example is his 1969 installation of 12 live tethered horses in a gallery in Rome, Kounellis's adopted home, recalling the equestrian monuments of Roman antiquity. No conventional monograph, Stephen Bann's richly illustrated assessment traces Kounellis's origins and influences, from Russian Modernism to the Byzantine tradition to late modernism, and also examines the mechanisms underlying Kounellis's work, in par-ticular his approach to space." Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In this sophisticated, in-depth analysis, Bann (art history, Univ. of Bristol) convincingly asserts that the work of Rome-based sculptor and installation artist Kounellis, who frequently evokes images from classical and Christian culture, must be interpreted within the context of Mediterranean history. Bann illuminates many important concepts in the current art scene, showing, for example, how Kounellis's interest in repetition and history is reflected in the unique way his exhibitions are organized. The artist shows previously completed and current works together in a "theatre of memory," hoping that displaying the same art time after time will add up to a visual language. Whether he actually achieves this goal is uncertain, and Bann's solid scholarship and lively prose would have been strengthened by a more frank evaluation of Kounellis's work on this point. Still, while there are numerous exhibition catalogs in English about Kounellis, this book is the most comprehensive monograph available. Strongly recommended for academic and specialized public libraries. Katherine C. Adams, Bowdoin Coll. Lib., Brunswick, ME Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
