Children's Literature - Jennie DeGenaro
In the country and small islands of Japan, people wear the same style clothes their ancestors wore. City dwellers usually wear modern, western-style clothes, but like to wear traditional dress on special occasions. Children also enjoy dressing up in traditional costumes. In cities, office workers wear business suits. In the country, workers wear a short tunic, wide, loose pants, and a thick cotton, quilted jacket. Uniforms indicate workers' occupations. Western-style uniforms are worn by soldiers, police officers, nurses. School children also wear uniforms. Girls usually wear white shoes, long white socks, navy blue skirts, and sailor-style tops. Boys wear navy blue shorts or pants, white shirts and ties. Athletic uniforms vary by sport. Traditional platform shoes are still worn today. A glossary of Japanese words is provided, as is a list of suggested books and websites. The index for this beautifully-illustrated 32-page book is helpful. "Costumes Around the World" is a ten-volume set that presents the styles and culture of various countries, from China to the United States. This series will be a welcome addition to elementary and middle school libraries. Reviewer: Jennie DeGenaro
