Overview

"This book fills a void in Japanese linguistic studies. Copula is a fundamental grammatical category, but the range of its forms and functions in Japanese has not been well understood. In this innovative study, the author offers a multidimensional description of the Japanese copula, revealing it to be at the interface of morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Most striking is Professor Narahara's discovery of the copula's function in expressing the speaker's knowledge or ignorance about the proposition of the sentence. Her detailed analysis of Japanese verbal inflectional morphology from both diachronic and synchronic perspectives leads to a new morphological feature analysis of copula forms to derive this modal function and she further proposes a series of unified accounts for a wide range of discourse phenomena." Those working in theoretical, functional, applied and socio-linguistics in Japanese or interested in cross-linguistic issues will find this study offers them new data and new explanations.

My interest in the function of be-verbs in world languages led me to this book and I am glad to have found it. The book offers much more than I had hoped for. The author presents very interesting data about Japanese syntactic and sociolinguistic phenomena, reaching an hypothesis that accounts for them in one fell fell swoop. I found the analyses logical and meticulous. The conclusion was original and extremely plausible.
