Read--in Japanese--how the wise and young Hikoichi shows his smarts with this two short stories in Japanese.

The first story has the lord of the castle testing Hikoichi in a Solomonesque question--which young lord is the true young lord?

The second story shows chosing the first and most favorable isn't always best. In the end, only Hikoichi can enjoy the cherry blossoms.

While beginners to Japanese can get a lot from this, hiragana knowledge is required.

* All kanji have furigana
* All vocabulary is listed with English under each paragraph
* The full story just in Japanese is also provided so you can practice reading without interruption
* After each story, we also provide an English summary. We recommend avoiding this until after tackling the Japanese, but if you need a little help, this summary should give you a hint.

Please note: All Japanese characters are shown as images due to limitations of current ebook readers. Of course as soon as it is possible, we will update the books with real Japanese fonts. We believe the Japanese is very readable, but apologize you will not be able to enlarge the Japanese font. The English is plain text and can be enlarged.

Meet the Author

In the late 1990s, Clay Boutwell moved from sunny Florida to Japan. He soon experienced the coldest--and snowiest--winter Fukui Prefecture had known in decades. Despite the cold, he soon warmed up to the Japanese culture and language.

Within a week of moving there, he met his future wife,Yumi. Together and over the years, they have created many ebooks, audio products, and software for learning Japanese.

In 1999, Clay started TheJapanesePage.com partly to help him prepare for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. It soon grew to become one of the most popular websites for learners of Japanese. It now boasts of thousands of pages of lessons, videos, audio podcasts, and a thriving forum for learners of all levels to ask questions.

Shortly before moving back to the States, Clay and Yumi created what would become Hiragana, the Basics of Japanese--a booklet for learning the Hiragana syllabary. From that start, they began creating and importing hard-to-find books and materials for learning Japanese and selling them on their website.

Their online bookstore is

They also maintain the free Japanese language learning site,

Currently, Clay and Yumi reside in Florida with their two children and two dogs.

    Innventive display

This book looks the way it does because the publisher scanned it because the utf-8 character set doesn't exist for books on the nook. That is, only roman characters display well for books. Japanese characters have to be scanned in through a scanner, which is why the sides are cut. Book is good, scans could have been kinder on the cropping, Barnes & Noble need to support utf-8 so this isn't neccessary.

    Text runs off the screen!

It looks like a fabulous idea, but half of the first and last characters are missing. I've tried changing various settings, but nothing helped. T_T
