    A Wonderful Reference

I have been studying Japanese for the past 3 years and this book has been a huge help. I have gone through at least 4 textbooks while switching between professors, but this book has always stayed by my side. The author wrote this book for those people who are constantly flipping back and forth between pages of a textbook, hoping to find that one grammatical gem that will change their sentence from dull to extraordinary. A must buy.

comparison to 'Dictionary of Japanese Grammar'

This book would be especially great for someone who already took a course and needs a quick refference. It organization is confusing for first time users. It DOES have some great quick refference like numbers, time, date, locators, particles, phrases, etc! For the price, this book is a steal when compared to 'Dictionary of Japanese Grammar,' which has similar content. I think the 'Dictionary...' is just as confusing for first time users, even though it IS aphabetized.

Succint work but short-fallen approach for sake of lazyness...

Learning any language, including Japanese requires effort and dedication. In this work of 'Japanese and Essentials of Grammar', the author's attempt to introduce to verbs and grammar of the Japanese language using only Roomaji characters, might make it speedier in some ways, and less painstakingly, but for the serious student it makes for an inadequate approach to face the real Japanese, meaning the Katakan,Hiragan and Kanji systems, to be clear. Just as a suggestion or even as a plea to the authors, please edit a volume 2 with the Japanese writing characters (assuming they'll even care and take time to read this humble opion)That might even stand for more business for the editors, and make your work on this book more complete and valuable. Gambatte kudasai!

A Gem of a Language book

This is a concise text which introductory students can use profitably. Unlike other intros this book gets to the basic linguistic structures of Japanese. It makes sense to Americans trying to understand the new world of Japanese. The examples are helpful. A book that will remain on your shelf for quite some time. The only fault with the book is that it is only in romaji.
