Civilization X: The Jaredites
According to Dr. John L. Sorenson of BYU and the Book of Mormon (Ether), the Jaredite civilization spanned the millennia from about c.3150 BC-c.570 BC, lasting approximately 2530-years (Appendix III). The vast majority of this time, they were righteous and obedient to God, but when they fell away into sin, the Lord's Spirit was removed from them, and their civilization was killed to near extinction by themselves and by those with whom they were then at war; it appeared to begin as a long-running civil war over religion (throughout several episodes of their civilization, but somewhat over 10-years at their end). Near the end, it apparently blossomed out into various of the "Jaredite colonies" or members of their confederation. Their civil war ended with a bang as it apparently included a nuclear war (google: Mohenjo-Darro and Harrapa; ancient nuclear war; nuclear war in India; the world; the Americas).
This "missing" civilization is unknown for what they are now, but especially in their ancient prime for what they were and represented nearly five millennia ago. The remains of their culture and their civilization are mistakenly credited to the Mayans which will be discussed further along.
The Jaredite civilization is now mainly extinct except for the "after images" which they left engraven within their empty and lost, sunken and destroyed cities; the references with which other ancient cultures used to exemplify them and their deeds; and the world-wide results of their ancient world-wide trade, their tools, their weapons and their last war.
This ancient civilization is discussed within The Book of Mormon, in the Chapter by the Prophet Ether. However, Ether provides only a very small amount of material on who they were and focuses primarily upon their spiritual development. Ether provides almost nothing about the civilization itself or the general population themselves except for some basic historical data such as their point of origination and some information on their religious trials within the New World. Their whole story is incredible; their achievements surpassed our own modern culture by a factor of five. Knowing the time frame in which the Jaredites lived and flourished, any decent researcher can extrapolate their civilization and their cultural achievements from what is found from within the world's historical record.
Beyond the fact that Ether writes about the Jaredites and, with other prophets provides a time line for their time on Earth, there is very little remaining hard evidence besides their concrete-paved super highways and secondary road network and some lesser evidence that they really existed at all. The Phoenicians, Egyptians and other ancient cultures left copious documentation of ages-old trade between the Old and New Worlds (Thompson, Ancient Egyptian Maize; Sorenson/ Johannessen, World Trade and Biological Exchanges Before 1492; Schoch, Voyages of the Pyramid Builders). Practically all archaeologists and historians ignore the available evidence about the Jaredites while the historians ignore their culture all together. Both scientific groups credit the Mayans with the Jaredite achievements, although the Mayans are only the Jaredites' religiously disenfranchised survivors of their Civil (and final) War (modern revelation; The Book of Mormon).
Who, or rather which earth civilization could possibly have built this type of advanced civilization. A civilization that could have paved super highways, credited by the scientists and explorers who have seen them, easily being the equivalent of America's own super Interstate highways, with a paved secondary road network in c.2400 BC, of which scientists and scholars are in general so totally ignorant? These superhighways tunnelled their way through granite mountains; crossed over colossal chasms and gorges with modern-like suspension bridges, the remains of which are still in place for all to see.
History has somehow been allowed to credit the Mayans with having built the roads and cities and temples and the "Mayan" calendar. The Mayans did not build anything now standing and nothing known of lasting worth; they were and are only the degenerate survivors of the Jaredites (the Book of Mormon).
Book publishers and scientists who continue looking only for "the smoking gun' or the "tell all" stelae, existing automobiles and any possible written records to prove Jaredite existence at all will wait in vain. I have no doubt that all of this will at some future date yet be discovered, but for now, The Book of Mormon (the second witness of Christ), modern revelation, what previous researchers discovered but could not identify and the existing historical record will have to suffice to prove my case. Even the present existing historical record by itself is sufficient to prove this author's case.
Those few archaeologists who are acquainted with the South American ruins, in the main, ignore them or attribute their building to another group (i.e., the Mayans, Incas and other native Indians, who are part of the degenerate, devolved remnants of the Jaredites, or Civilization X, as are most all South and Central American Indians, who later were in-bred with the Spanish) but who could not possibly have built a physical cityscape of the nature existing throughout Central and South America. Native North American Indians are in the main (but not entirely) the devolved degenerate and religiously disenfranchised Nephites who were also cursed with a darkened skin (reddish brown).
Almost no one knows details of the Jaredite existence and yet these details are in abundance throughout the historical record of our modern physical world; all that was missing was one researcher (your humble Author) to put the pieces of their mystery together. This missing Civilization that left such a gigantic footprint on the ancient world stage is called the Jaredite Civilization, named for their first leader, Jared.
If the Reader will refer to The Book of Ether within the Book of Mormon, we can read the story of Jared who, with his family and a few of their friends having survived the destruction of the Tower of Babel in ancient Babylon with their original language intact, were guided by the Lord away from Iraq, to the shores of the sea.
The Jaredites of their civilization, as well as the follow-on Nephite Civilization, were a race of "... large and mighty men" (Ether 1:34; 15:26; Alma 48: 11-13 in the Book of Mormon; Skousen, The First Two Thousand Years), their genetic stature continuing to reflect both civilizations' Adamic origins as to mankind's original standard size of 10-12 feet in height. There are so many references to various ancient giant mummies having red hair, that it is fairly safe to consider that a significant percentage of the Jaredites did in fact have real red hair (the separate top knots to the Easter Island Mauoi—statues—were all from a local red stone and the red-haired Jaredites could easily be the reason for these Mauoi top knots). They were large and mighty men, tall of stature and heavily built, apparently well muscled. A portion of them seemed to have also had a genetic abnormality, breeding true with six each fingers and toes as shown by mummified remains. Jaredite remains have been found throughout the New World, Europe, Asia and the African bush.
The original Jaredites left Iraq and Babylon after the Tower of Babylon fiasco. They were guided at first by Jared and "the brother of Jared"—Mahonri Moriancumr. Jared and Mahonri were descended directly from their great—grandfather Noah, through his son Shem (Joseph Smith, modern revelation; Ether 2, Book of Mormon).
As the patriarch of his own family and the one who was instrumental in bringing the small band together, the group was called "The Jaredites". They were guided by the Lord into the wilderness together with their families and their friends with their own families.
Mahonri was later called of the Lord and given the calling to be the group's prophet and de facto leader. He appears to have been an exceedingly humble and righteous individual, and the one to whom Jared continually deferred to in order to call upon the Lord for their needed additional guidance and counsel.
While living in the wilderness for several years after leaving Babylon, the Lord further guided them into making small sealed boats, ultimately building eight of a type of elongated dish-shaped light barges into which they loaded themselves, their animals, including their cureloms (a possible type of baby elephant or mammoth/mastodon (from an Orson Pratt talk, 27 Dec 1868; Ether 9:19) and culoms (also possibly alpacas and llamas) and seeds of all types, bees, etc.
The Lord then guided them through the furious waves and ocean currents as "... the wind blew without ceasing ... directly towards the promised land" for the entire 344-days, 15,000-miles of their voyage (Ether 6:5; 8;11). as they sailed to a land "... flowing with milk and honey, a land choice above all others", that is, to the Americas where they eventually landed on what is currently thought by LDS scholars to be the west coast of Peru in South America. Their animals may likely have been both in cages and slings, and possibly in some type of Divine hibernation for the voyage's duration.
According to LDS scholars, the Jaredites are believed to have travelled through a portion of the Red Sea, then across the Arabian Sea, the Indian and Atlantic Oceans and then finally up from the southern part of the Pacific Ocean, eventually landing on the western shore of South America, around Peru.
There they settled the area of what is now called Peru. Eventually, they spread throughout both Americas. Mahonri is reportedly buried in what is now Murray, Utah, but this could not be verified.
Through Divine assistance and direction, they founded, built and developed a fantastic civilization in "... a land that was choice above all other lands which the Lord God had preserved for a righteous people (Ether, 2:7), with the Lord's admonition ringing in their ears:
"... whoso should possess this land of promise, from that time henceforth, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fullness of his wrath should come upon them (Ether 2:8).
"... whatsoever nation shall possess it shall serve God or they shall be swept off when the fullness of His wrath shall come upon them ..." (Ether 2:9).
"For Behold, this is a land which is choice above all other lands; wherefore, he that doth possess it shall serve God or shall be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God" (Ether 2:10).
It was the Lord's decree that much of the Jaredite records not be included in the Book of Mormon records that the Prophet Nephi later transcribed (a prophet from the Nephite Civilization, c.600 BC to c.420 AD. This was the follow-on western civilization within the Americas' after the Jaredites were cleansed from off the land).
We do not know directly very much of what the Jaredites did with their opportunity to create a brand new civilization except for what they physically left throughout the world and what other lands and cultures have had to say about a "missing" civilization. They existed; they lived within Peru of South America; the hard evidence from the results are here. We can be fairly certain that the Jaredites had a worldwide influence upon many of the world's cultures through trade, religion and probable economic/technological-style missionary work.
We do know a great deal about what other world civilizations did which followed the Jaredites in time and which appeared to have received cultural and technical assistance from them. These were mainly the young and newer cultures following Noah's landing such as Sumeria, Egypt, Persia and Babylon.
While no direct evidence exists to prove this fact, we do know that today's scientists have startling (to them) discovered that many of these young cultures started out with technology far superior to that which today's learned men would expect or would mentally allow these young cultures to be in possession of. Yet the results exist! To claim that the evidence does not exist proving their knowledge and the facts would be a lie!
We can account for the Jaredite influence on later ancient world cultures because from the Book of Mormon, we know four very important details about the Jaredites: first, we know that the Jaredites did exist, within Peru of South and then Central America, for certain, and probably into North America as well; secondly, we know the approximate start and end dates of their civilization; thirdly, we can derive from the length of their civilization that they worshipped and remained true and steadfast only to God for a very long time, much longer, perhaps by a factor of almost five, than modern man's civilization has existed since "Columbus's re-discovery" of our great land. As a result of their faithfulness, God could be expected to have given the Jaredites His promised "an increase of knowledge" (Daniel 12:4; Romans 1:20-27; and others) leading to their high technological achievements; and fourthly and most important, we can deduce from their civilization's timeline, that many existing and seemingly anachronistic anomalies that are visible within our own period, should be more accurately ascribed as originating from the Jaredite civilization. Thus, we can obtain many mental/visual snap shots of what their life may have been like during various stages and periods of their existence.
Following the Great (Noah's, or Noachin) Flood, and after Noah's ark finally came to rest on Mount Ararat in Turkey, his family grew (bear in mind that Noah and his family are supposed to be the sole survivors from the original civilization (the First earth civilization, the Adamic), sired by Adam and Eve, according to The Bible; Noah and his family undoubtedly maintained their Adamic language and Adamic writing skills and alphabet and their knowledge of math and science, and other skills and taught them to their children and to their descendants). They multiplied into a numerous population. The Jaredites were broken off from Iraq's main population then living after the Babylonian Tower of Babel fiasco (Genesis 11). Allowing them to keep their language intact, the Lord then guided them to South America (Ether, Book of Mormon) and assisted them to again establish a righteous civilization unto God.
Based on how quickly some areas of science were advanced in various youthful nations around the world both during and after the Jaredite's span of civilization, such as spirituality, medicine, math, astronomy and avionics, architecture; and construction with megalithic blocks for example, they were then far, far ahead of current modern America in many areas of science and technology.
Near the end of the Jaredite civilization, the Mulekites were broken off from the Jews at Jerusalem (c.586-87; stemming from the same basic Babylonian stock as were the Jaredites) and were brought to South America in a manner similar to how the Jaredites arrived.
However, according to BYU's John L. Sorenson, the actual end of the Jaredite civilization may not be dated entirely without question. Ether (11:20-21) implies that later immigrant peoples (from the settlement of the South American city known as Zarahemla by the ancient Jewish group known as the Mulekites—and later by Lehi (c.585-6 BC), a Jewish prophet who, with his family (plus a few others from Jerusalem) and father of the Nephite civilization that followed after the Jaredites), reached the Promised Land in America at a time after the last Jaredite prophet—Ether—was born (google, follow all links). The Mulekites may possibly have perpetuated some of the Jaredite culture for an unknown, but relatively short time before possibly joining up with the newly arrived Nephites.
