All Music Guide - Andrew Leahey
Jason Castro may not have been the perfect American Idol contestant -- he always seemed too mellow to make a serious bid for first place -- but he sure knew how to sell a song, with his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" topping the iTunes charts several days after its TV performance. Idol producers eventually yanked the song off the Internet, fearing that sales statistics would sway voters, but the facts had already spoken for themselves. Castro had chart potential. Of course, all of that occurred two years before the release of Castro's debut album. In the world of American Idol, a world in which aspiring singers are the talk of Tinseltown one minute and forgotten faces the next, timing is everything. David Cook and David Archuleta released albums within months of the Idol finale, followed one year later by Michael Johns, Kristy Lee Cook, and Brooke White. Jason Castro's album is the very last of the bunch, an acoustic LP that finds its creator strumming the guitar, crooning about love, and co-writing most of his own material. The timing isn't perfect, but the songs aren't bad at all, with most of the material taking its cues from Jason Mraz, Ben Harper, and other folk-pop heavyweights. The most memorable tunes here -- "Let's Just Fall in Love Again," possibly the best song recorded by an Idol veteran in years, and an extended version of "Hallelujah" -- weren't written by Castro, but he performs both like they're his own, singing with an understated sincerity that looked like disinterest on TV but sounds great on record. Meanwhile, the tracks he did write bode well for Castro's future releases, with breezy melodies and lighthearted, summery arrangements that suit his voice well.

    A Great First CD

Jasons' music was great. Inspirational, made me feel happy and I sung along with all of the songs the first time I listened to them. The songs are so catchy and upbeat. I could listen to his music all day!

    Young at Heart

I am 51 yeas old, but listening to this CD, makes me feel like I am 18 years old and romance is alive and all around! It is wonderful and I really like I want to fall in love with you,again.... it makes my heart beat fast! I remember old boyfriends and I then think of my great husband, and dare I say it... necking with him! Cuddling on the couch with some wine and candles, breezes through the window, ah, well! let me just say this, Jason may not have won Americal Idol, but he has won my heart and ears, and I look forward to his new songs!

Jason Had Me At The First Note

I first saw Jason in the top 24 round of Idol and have been mezmorized ever since. His voice just has that way of moving you and rattleing your soul. Not only is he a true artist and songwriter, but he's also a kind and gentle soul. I've had the pleasure of meeting him and we really need more musicians like him. He's humble, witty, and so down to earth. I wish him the best of success! This album has both fun and upbeat tracks that make you want to move your feet, but also slow, moving ballads that warm your heart. A solid first album!
My only negative would be that B&N doesn't have the 14 track extended version available. Why?

He's going to hit it big

My wife and I heard Jason perform on ABC's The Bachelor and immediately looked to see if he had any CD's on the market. We pre-ordered it and were eagerly awaiting its release and arrival. We listened to it and both commented "this is really nice." We thought of many people that would enjoy his music. It has a nice beat to it with a great balance of instrumentation. The best part is there are so many venues one could play the CD and it would be fitting. While many of the songs are enjoyable, my favorite is "Hallelujah." Jason's CD will be a hit -- he's going to hit it big(ger) and need to begin work on his second CD.
