Overview

Jack Buchanan, a worker at the Jasper Mining Company, is sure of his place in the outside world, but has lost his faith in the tragedy of a fire. Foreign-born and raised, Milena Shabanov flees from a home she loves to the strange and barbaric America. A Romani blessed with “the sight,” she is content in the company of visions and spirit oracles, but finds herself isolated in a brutal mining town that has little use for women. Surrounded by inhumane working conditions at the mine, senseless death, and overwhelming greed, miners begin disappearing. Tempers flare and Jack must decide where he stands: with the officers and mining president; with Victor Creely, to whom Jack owes his life; or with the miners, whose lives are worth less to the company than pack animals. Milena, sensing deep despair and death in a mining town infested with restless spirits, searches for answers to the workers’ disappearances. But she cannot trust anyone, especially not Jack Buchanan, a man haunted by his own past.

This was a pretty good book but I was confused as to why it was listed as book two of the Spirit of the River Series. Has the same kind of story line but does not reference any of the characters in book one or the river for that matter. It is a good book, just do not try to reconcile it with book one. Getting ready to read book three and am curious if the it is the same way.

I just finished reading Jasper Mountain in two days because I could hardly put it down. The characters are so real one wonders about what happens after the book ends. The emotions these characters elicit in the reader are vast and real. The plot more than holds one attention. It was difficult not to go to the end to see where the book would take each character...but I controlled myself and read every word and enjoy every moment. Highly recommend.

There isn't really a river in this book, so it rather stretches the imagination to include this one with the other two. I'm almost finished with this, will finish tonight. Well written, some of the nastiest villians I've read. Book one sort of spooked me at first, you never knew what that bad guy could come up with!

I thought this was the 2nd in the series to Spirit of the River and while it was written by the same author, it was not a continuation......that is in book #3 Spirit of the River Series which I am reading now, so I was at first disappointed. This book is an entirely different story about entirely different people, and once I got into the book, I really enjoyed the characters and their struggles in the gold rush period of time. The author writes good characterizations and struggles with their lives during this time - she mixes in enough despair and greed with hope and love - it's all in there and a very good read.
