Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Jay's day is full of the usual activities: fixing his toast, brushing his teeth, getting dressed, and going out to play. But he is sometimes sad and lonely. That all changes when he wishes upon a star one evening. His wish comes true as a magical horse named Ben appears and becomes his friend. Lulu Delacre's cartoon-style illustrations and panels are a major departure from those in her other books. They are spot on for the intended audience of this book, children with developmental and learning differences and disabilities including autism spectrum disorder, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, and language delays. Two sheets of picture symbols based on the Boardmaker? Picture Communication Symbols are included. Each page of the book includes one simple sentence to describe the action on that page. Under the text are boxes in which the reader or teacher can place the appropriate picture symbols. Two pages of endmatter provide information about the many ways this book can be used with children. Additional information can be found at jayandbenbooks.com. Swanson, a special education teacher, and illustrator Delacre field-tested this interactive book as they were working on it. As a result, it is one of the few books available for special needs children that moves beyond a pedantic tone. It can help them understand daily tasks, but it also deals with the idea of friendship. The tasks of spreading jam on toast, brushing teeth and getting dressed are shown in a clear and interesting way. Passage of time is noted in the changing colors of the background as the story moves from day to night. The loose pages of picture symbols will be an issue for public library circulation. I would suggest laminating photocopies of the pages for circulation, and keeping the originals at the library. This is a valuable resource for special education teachers. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
