Jay-Z

Overview

Born Shawn Carter in New York City in 1970, Jay-Z enjoys the kind of rags-to-riches success that most people only dream of. Driven by raw ambition and tremendous talent, Jay-Z started his own record company, Roc-A-Fella Records, in 1995 when, as a struggling artist, he couldn't convince any music labels to give him a recording contract. On the strength of seven consecutive best-selling albums, Jay-Z quickly established himself and Roc-A-Fella as powerful forces in the music industry. Today he is a Grammy Award ...

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
This biography of rapper Jay-Z is one of a proposed "Hip-Hop Stars" series of ten volumes profiling various stars of the hip-hop scene. Jay-Z was born Shawn Carter on December 4, 1969 in New York City. The youngest of four children, he grew up in a public housing project in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. A good student, Jay-Z had a talent for rhyming from an early age, and often as a child spent hours creating clever rhymes. By his teen years, he had identified an easy source of money: drug dealing. He was aware that the long-term prospects of that career were dangerous at best, so at the first opportunity he parlayed his new wealth into a better career as a rapper. His first album, Reasonable Doubt, was a collaborative effort with Damon Dash and other friends. When record companies did not offer them the deal they hoped for, Jay-Z and two others formed their own company, Roc-A-Fella Records, and marketed the album themselves. Damon, with a strong entrepreneurial bent, found ways to market Jay-Z's growing fame with a very profitable apparel line. More popular albums followed, some receiving high critical acclaim. Jay-Z officially retired in December of 2004 and became CEO of Def Jam records. Later he came out of retirement to record another successful album. The biography includes extensive back matter, such as a timeline, an index, a bibliography, a glossary, a list of books for further reading, a filmography, a discography, This makes the book useful for report writing. The book includes numerous text boxes about other rappers, recording companies, and more. These interrupt the flow of the narrative. Each chapter includes one or two attractive color photographs. The quality of this series appears to be highly uneven; this volume much better than Tupac Shakur. Libraries that need to boost their collection of biographies of popular musicians may want to purchase this one, but examine the others in the series before selecting more. Reviewer: Leslie Rounds
