Jazz Cinema: When Jazz Meets Movies

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
The best that can be said of these theme compilations on High Note is that they sound terrific, and they offer basically solid readings of standard and jazz classics affiliated with the movies in some way. This two-disc, 31-track compilation assembles readings of pop standards often used in cinema, to create what can only be called a grand "moodscape" that is equal parts easy listening jazz and nostalgic music for movie lovers. Some of the performers are well-known, such as Stacey Kent in her reading of Charles Trenet's "Que Rest-T-il de Nos Amours?" and Caroline Daley performing Edith Piaf's signature tune, "La Vie en Rose." The best that can be said of these theme compilations on High Note is that they sound terrific, and they offer basically solid readings of standard and jazz classics affiliated with the movies in some way. This two-disc, 31-track compilation assembles readings of pop standards often used in cinema, to create what can only be called a grand "moodscape" that is equal parts easy listening jazz and nostalgic music for movie lovers. Some of the performers are well-known, such as Stacey Kent in her reading of Charles Trenet's "Que Rest-T-il de Nos Amours?" and Caroline Daley performing Edith Piaf's signature tune, "La Vie en Rose." Yes, there are many songs in English as well, including an unconventional to say the least Carribean-ized reading of "Summertime" by Mishka Adams, and Norah Jones' now well-known take on "The Tennessee Waltz" with Joel Harrison's group, and "We've Only Just Begun" by Cris Delanno. Each track here, if you've not guessed it already, features a female vocalist fronting a jazz or jazz-ish group. This is certainly not for jazz fans looking for the music's more adventurous aspects, but for what it is, this succeeds.
