All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
With Jazz Loves Marvin Gaye, Universal has assembled a very solid jazz celebration of Gaye's work from their very own library of labels taken from recordings from the 1970s through the beginning of the new century. Highlights on this 11-track collection are numerous, though there aren't any duds in the mix. The set opens with one of the highlights in Quincy Jones' reading of "What's Going On." Regina Carter's elegant and unlikely rendition of "Don't Mess with Mr. T" contrasts beautifully with the sheer grace of Phil Upchurch's "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)." Performances by Mongo Santamaría, David "Fathead" Newman, and Tom Scott & the L.A. Express are also included. Given the price tag and that all of these tunes are remastered, this is a steal for Marvin Gaye fans and soul-jazz heads.
