Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Lucy Cousins, the creator of the fun-loving Maisy, delivers a hide-and-seek picture book filled with jungly, bright die-cuts.

Behind big palm trees and in the jungle brush, Mama JoJo and her little lemur, Jazzy, are busy playing hide-and-seek. Mama can't find Jazzy, but she discovers many other animals in her search! Turning the oversize die-cut pages reveals Anteater hiding behind orange plants, Crocodile and some feathered friends near the tum tum trees, and Tiger and Frog next to the fliff fluff flowers. After meeting many other animals, a smiling Mama wonders, "Oh Baby Jazzy, will I ever find you?" Thankfully for us, she does -- an awesome back-of-the-book trifold reveals the elusive youngster happily hugging his Mama in a tree.

This utterly sweet and sophisticated picture book will have curious toddlers feeling jazzed up about Jazzy! Readers will eagerly search for the lemur along with Mama, combing the vividly colored pages and spotting many exotic animals along the way. Cousins' well-imagined book is beautifully constructed, with layer upon layer of die-cut pages that give stunning depth to her jungle. Hide-and-seek has never been as exciting as it is in this rich and vibrant adventure. Matt Warner

Mama Jo Jo is playing hide and go seek with baby Jazzy. As Mama Jo Jo looks through the jungle, the other animals help her find her baby. This colorful picture book has been illustrated and written by Lucy Cousins. This is not a typical picture book. This hide and seek adventure is exceptional because she uses a series of die cuts to make the book unique and intriguing. So, each page has a different shape. When laid on top of one another, they look more like a 3-D Jungle with various shapes and colors. The delightful illustrations add to the reading experience. Young children can turn each page looking for baby Jazzy and find various jungle plants and animals. Children can learn the names of the animals that are found in the jungle. The book is beautifully laid out and put together in a way that children can enjoy the hide and go seek game with an adult or on their own. Reviewer: Nicole Peterson Davis

Clever die-cut pages and liftable flaps invite reader's participation in a handful of wild titles. A baby lemur plays hide-and-seek with Mama Jojo in Jazzy in the Jungle by Maisy creator Lucy Cousins. Readers join the search, lifting layered, die-cut pages that highlight forest fauna and the peering eyes or other attributes of wild creatures. The polka dots on the stem of an exotic flower, for instance, become the markings of a caterpillar with the turn of a page. This oversize edition sports a sumptuous tropical palette; a final gatefold displays all the rain forest animals, who help to unite the mother with Baby Jazzy.

PreS-A lemur is playing hide-and-seek with her baby. As Mama JoJo makes her way through the jungle looking for Jazzy, she asks a variety of animals if they've seen her child. They each respond in turn, "Not here," and a few suggest alternative places to look. This cleverly designed, oversized book makes use of multiple flaps and small die cuts that create new pictures with each page turn. Toddlers will enjoy the fun and humor in hunting for Jazzy. The boldly colored illustrations with thick black outlines are similar in style to those in the "Maisy" series. They are simply drawn but are eye-catching and engaging. An appealing choice for group or one-on-one sharing.-Sheilah Kosco, Rapides Parish Library, Alexandria, LA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A mother lemur searches for her baby among the flora and fauna of the jungle. Mama JoJo and her Baby Jazzy play a rambunctious game of hide and seek. Mama's calls for her playful offspring are answered by a dazzling array of jungle critters secreted behind the leaves and flowers of the dense habitat. Readers encounter critters across the biological board: the reptilian lizard and snake mingle in the same habitat as a wee humming bird, an awkward anteater, a hairy caterpillar, and more. Mama's search leads her into the heart of the forest, past "big boo" trees and "fliff fluff" flowers. Ultimately mother and child are reunited-with a little help from the jungle animals. Cousins's die-cut illustrations, rendered in a rainbow of tropical hues, provide clues to discovering the undercover lemur. Several pages of illustrations cut out in a variety of outlines are bracketed by two full pages, with the interior pages forming a layered effect that encourages readers to explore the depths of the jungle in search of Jazzy. A series of peeping eyeballs, which can be spied peering through the pages at various points, also serve to lead readers down this merry path of seek and find. Vividly colorful and delightful fun, this is Cousins doing what she does best: entertaining the youngest of readers with panache. (Picture book. 2-5)
