Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Medieval historian McGuire (Roskilde Univ., Denmark) here offers the writing of Celestine Priest Jean Gerson (1363-1429). A leading theologian, preacher, and spiritual writer of his time, Gerson served as chancellor of the University of Paris from 1395 and worked for unity of the papacy during its schism (1378-1414). Writing often in French, as well as Latin, he dealt with spiritual and mystical matters in a practical way to guide the ordinary person. Gerson's clear thinking and advice is surprisingly modern, and McGuire's lengthy introduction places his subject's thought in well-documented historical and spiritual settings. McGuire has done a service in making Gerson's texts available in English for an audience beyond the academy. Recommended for most academic and religion collections and public libraries where there is an interest.--Anna M. Donnelly, St. John's Univ. Lib., Jamaica, NY
