Twenty-six colorful and playful monsters present the alphabet in thirteen delightful rhyming couplets. Kids will giggle at Drew who "blows beetles from his nose," Cody with a bellybutton that glows, and purple Gert with crawdads dangling from her ears—the perfect monster fashion-accessory. Looking closely at Quentin's eyebrows that crawl reveals hairy insects, and each of Marilyn's spider legs sports a different shoe. They are lumpy and bumpy, some are toothless, and while some have wings, others have spikes. They are round, tall, small, and all shapes in-between. Each is an individual and suitably silly; together they make reciting the alphabet fun. The bright crayon colors surrounded by large amounts of white space enables each character to show off his uniqueness. There are alphabet books aplenty but this raucous romp deserves a second look. 2003, Chronicle Books, Ages 3 to 6.

PreS-K-This book features 26 odd and goofy monsters acting like preschoolers-jumping rope, playing in the sandbox, having a snack, etc. The creatures come in various shapes, colors, and sizes, and have strange snouts and googly eyes. Bold and dynamic, Parkins's acrylic-and-alkyd paintings appear on spreads with lots of white space. Although the monsters may be gross ("Drew blows beetles from his nose"), they are hardly scary, making this an enjoyable concept book. Like children, these monsters even learn their ABCs from a book, where they discover the strangest creature of all. "They scramble for a better view./Hey! They're looking right at you!"-Shelley B. Twenty-six monsters, alphabetically arranged, enjoy a day at school in this cheerful offering. "Ann has alligator skin, / Bud grows toadstools on his chin," Leuck begins. Parkins's bright, offbeat illustrations, which stand out against a white background, have massive kid-appeal. They also add another dimension to the story. In a double-page spread for the letters K and L, for example, Parkins turns Kendra, whose "tail is spiked and strong" into an ungainly green dino in a frilly tutu. Lucy, whose "tongue is ten feet long," is an anteater-type creature who uses that appendage to grip a marker for drawing. It's a stretch to call this an alphabet book, however. Aside from the monsters' names, there aren't any other letter/word associations to be made. (Picture book. 6-9)
