Overview

While people are heralding Jeff Bridges' 2011 self-titled album as his debut recording, the fact is, it's his second. His actual debut was released in 2000 and entitled Be Here Soon, on the independent Ramp Records imprint. The earlier recording -- which sounded like Bob Dylan meeting Michael McDonald -- bears little resemblance to this organic, laid-back collection of 11 self-penned Americana songs on the improbable Blue Note label. The album was inspired by his Academy Award-winning performance as the burned out country singer Bad Blake in Crazy Heart. Bridges teamed up with longtime friend and Crazy Heart soundtrack producer T-Bone Burnett and his go-to studio team on these 11 rootsy, intimate songs.

I like Jeff Bridges' voice and the guitar accompaniament. Some of the bonus songs had really sappy lyrics--as if they had been written by an amateur. Sound quality was good.

I loved the songs Jeff sang in "Crazy Heart", so I believed I would dig this album too. At first I was a little disappointed because the music was slow and I wasn't rockin' to the rhythm. Then, after a couple more times of listening, I realized that this album had a lot more to say at a deeper level. Jeff has been majorly influenced by Bob Dylan, the greatest poet of the Baby Boomers, so it appears to me that Jeff's new album is mixing Dylanesque poetry with country and delivering a deeper message (maybe it's his leanings towards Buddhism, too, that are being revealed). Lots of love being spread around with a sprinkling of reflection. "What a Little Bit of Love Can Do" is my favorite, yet, the slower ones are thought provoking and make you detach and look deep inside! Sing along and transcend into Jeff's world. It's a good place to be! Rex the Surf Dog
