Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janis Flint-Ferguson
Competition was a hallmark of the Burton family when three brothers, Jeff being the youngest, became involved in go-kart racing. When Burton was too old for go-karts, he moved into stock car racing, where he quickly learned what was needed to make the cars do what he asked of them. Burton became one of the most consistent drivers in the business, learning his trade in the support series races, and finally making it into the top echelon Winston Cup series in 1994. This story reinforces the fact that winning the series takes much more than just talent; Burton, who has won many races, has yet to win a championship. Currently driving with Richard Childress, he has been in contention, but has yet to achieve that elusive honor. He has, however, worked for the safety of the sport, especially in the wake of Dale Earnhart, Sr.'s fatal accident. While so many books of this type chronicle the top flight athlete, this one is a lesson in the uncertainty of sports. Despite Burton's passion and skills, he has not been able to achieve the highest honor in the sport—the series championship. The "Heroes of Racing" series will be well suited for middle and high school libraries. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson
