Jeff Gordonby Rosemary Wallner
Discusses the racing career, life, and accomplishments of Jeff Gordon, the youngest driver to win the Winston Cup title.
Children's LiteratureJeff Gordon is a stock car driver. As the youngest driver ever to win the Winston Cup Title, he is well known to many sports fans of all ages. Capstone Press took this into account when they chose him for one of ten titles in their "Sports Heroes" series this year. He has raced his whole life, beginning at age 4 when his stepfather bought him a quarter-midget car. He entered his first race that year and has never stopped. This book covers his early life, training, accomplishments and challenges. As the series is committed to meeting the needs of students who may be struggling to read, who need encouragement to pick up a book, or who have English as a second language, they choose public figures of popular interest that will attract the attention of reluctant readers. Their books use short sentences and a plain matter-of-fact style, making the information accessible. The layout of each chapter is in short sub-sections, which give the reader a sense of achievement as they complete each one. The books also use full-page photographs at the beginning of each chapter and liberal photographs throughout. There are easy-to-scan charts and timelines, as well as Internet addresses for further research, a "Words-to-Know" section, indexes and other features of nonfiction books. 2001, Capstone Press/Capstone Books, $21.26. Ages 8 to 10. Reviewer: Nancy Partridge
