    I Also Recommend:

Another great book by Jeff Smith

Over the last year and half I have purchased over 40 photography-related books. More recently it has been harder to find new books that have more than 20% content that is not covered in one or more of the books I already own. That has not been the case with Jiff's new book. Some of the things that stood out with this book were:
-Jeff guides photographers to be in the business of photography and not just be photographers. For those of us transitioning from hobby to profession this is an important mindset change to adopt!!! We must understand and focus on what our clients want and not what we find fun. The "toys" are now tools. ROI has replaced the fun/cool factor when making purchases, etc...
-His techniques are clearly explained. Throughout the book he also points out common mistakes made by inexperienced photographers. I find that to be very helpful in insuring I avoid doing those things.
    - Every topic he covers are also addressed in many other books but this book has many tidbits of info I have not seen elsewhere--why he uses a tripod, some of his corrective posing techniques, his way to find the best position for the lights, etc...
    - With some books I feel like some of the content is just there to add to the page count. That was not the case with this book. It was a very informative and enjoyable read.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that is currently or planning on doing portrait photography. Jeff has demonstrated that he is a talented photographer, has strong business skills, and is both a great teacher and author.

    Informative book...

Who knew you could write a whole book on photographing simply head and shoulder portraits and still find it an interesting read. I was impressed with the amount of information that is in Jeff Smith's Guide to Head & Shoulders Portraits. He has a lot of great photographs for samples too. He states many times, that you really must talk with the person and find out what they want in a session. As the number one complaint is the photographer may take a great photo, but it wasn't what the client wanted. Jeff covers a lot of information in this book, ranging from the basic equipment needed, clothing, posing, lighting, background selection, working on location, customer service and postproduction. If you are looking for a basic how to book, then this is the one for you!

Jeff Smith is the Photographer to learn from

Jeff Smith has written another exceptional book! This book is a must have for any photographer who wants to take their senior portrait business to the next level. He understands that "head and shoulders portraits" provide the majority of the profit in the senior portrait market. There is so much more to the head and shoulders portrait than having it look like the typical DMV photo that so many photographers do because they get lazy and in a routine.

Unlike many of the other photography books that are on the market, Jeff provides you with in-depth knowledge of the complete process. You will learn that his lighting techniques, poses, customer service, building client relationships and fashion forward style can help you achieve success. I applaud his no nonsense style of writing. He's direct, uses humor, and has a great way of explaining what he does and why he does it.

Head and Shoulders Portrait Photography provides you with so much information and beautiful images that you will find yourself reading it several times and learning something new each time. Always adding new techniques to his already creative style is what separates him from the rest. He has been in the business over 20 years and provides you with an unbelievable amount of information to help you succeed, and wants you to succeed. This book has been an enormous help and excellent tool for my business.

I highly recommend this book as well as any of Jeff Smith's other books such as:

Profitable Portraits: The Photographers Guide to Creating Portraits That Sell

Lighting for Outdoor and Location Portrait Photography

Corrective Lighting, Posing and Retouching for Digital Portrait Photographers (2nd Ed.)

Thanks Jeff for your insight and knowledge of the business and allowing me the opportunity to learn from you.
