Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Songwriter, producer, performer -- newcomer Jennifer Hanson has a lot going for her besides a hit single "Beautiful Goodbye" right out of the box. Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Songwriter, producer, performer -- newcomer Jennifer Hanson has a lot going for her besides a hit single "Beautiful Goodbye" right out of the box. In photos, the rail-thin Californian looks a bit like Sheryl Crow; in voice she's a cross between Crow and Jo Dee Messina -- the former's sultry seductiveness, the latter's bluesy grit -- and her style of contemporary country is replete with rock energy and attack. Churning, celebratory rhythms, Stones-ish guitar, and an exultant, layered vocal combine to cut appealingly against the grain of a breakup story that forms the narrative of "Beautiful Goodbye." A friend calls off her wedding and is encouraged to cut loose in other ways, too, as guitars crunch and ring on "Get Yourself Back" complete with a neat axe lick lifted in part from the Beatles' "If I Needed Someone". The most compelling song on the album is the winsome, atmospheric shuffle "Travis," in which Hanson recounts a childhood friendship with an abused boy "Is your world still black and blue?". Hanson can dig into a ballad with the best of 'em, too. The bluesy, dramatic heartbreaker "It Isn't Just Raining" which Pam Tillis scorched on her Thunder and Roses album and the alluringly romantic album closer, "Simply Yours," with its mix of acoustic guitar, crying pedal steel, lush strings, and ascending orchestral passages, suggest more than a passing familiarity with classic pop phrasing and attitude. Jennifer Hanson the artist has it all, and Jennifer Hanson the album sounds like the start of something big.
All Music Guide - Todd Kristel
The album's opener, "Beautiful Goodbye," is representative of the upbeat, electric guitar-driven sound that dominates much of Jennifer Hanson's debut. Yet it's also somewhat misleading, since there's more to Hanson than this somewhat overwrought and generic slice of pop
ock music. While she doesn't quite put a distinctively original, personal stamp on every song, she does demonstrate an impressive command of her craft. Her voice has just the right combination of sultriness and grit, and she avoids diva-style overkill when she emotes. The songs nine of which were co-written by Hanson demonstrate a knack for observational storytelling, most notably the tale of a womanizer on "Half a Heart Tattoo" and the recollection of an abused friend on "Travis." Another high point is the ballad "It Isn't Just Raining," which was co-written by Hanson, Mark Nesler, and Tony Martin and originally recorded by Pam Tillis; her rendition of this song, as well as the classic country sound of "This Far Gone," indicates that there is emotional substance to her music despite the slickness of some of this album.

    Jennifer has opened a can....

Jennifer Hansons new album is great!- One of her songs- "travis" is great and im sure it will be a hit- i put it on replay and just listened to it over and over again. I think alot of people will compare her to Sheryll Crow or Faith Hill but she will eventually be known just as "Jennifer"- she is real and sings about real events in her life, and writes almost all her songs.

Jennifer Hanson's debut is a beautiful introduction

To say that ¿Beautiful Goodbye¿ is one of the most infectious country singles in memory is only the first of many great reasons to discover the self-titled debut from Jennifer Hanson. The La Habra, California native¿s 11-song effort showcases her skills as songwriter and singer ¿ indeed her voice often mirrors the authentic tone of Roseanne Cash. In addition to the uptempo ¿Beautiful Goodbye,¿ other highlights include the tender ¿This Far Gone,¿ propulsive ¿One Little Word¿ and defiant ¿Get Yourself Back¿ (which has the sonic feel of George Harrison¿s ¿If I Needed Someone¿). While she will likely draw comparisons with the likes of modern country¿s Faith Hill and Shania Twain, that ignores the fact that Hanson has co-written every track on her album and fuses traditional country-western, rock and pop better than her better-known counterparts. Combining real world-stories, accessible melodies and intelligent arrangements, ¿Jennifer Hanson¿ should establish Hanson as one of the most important country artists of the early 21st century. The fact that she also co-produced the album is further evidence of her talents.
