Children's Literature - Kate Szegda
Tween and teen Jennifer Lawrence fans will like this biography of the young woman who helped make Katniss Everdeen an icon. A tomboy growing up in Kentucky, Jennifer loved horses, but by middle school, she discovered cheerleading, modeling, and acting in community theatre. Supporting her dream to be an actress, Jennifer’s parents took her to NYC to search for acting and modeling jobs, where—the odds ever being in her favor—Jennifer was discovered by a photographer from a major fashion house. That summer, Jennifer began doing commercials and small parts in TV shows like Cold Case and Medium. Television led to movies, particularly independent films. Jennifer preferred the grittier roles and soon won awards for her performances. Her role in Winter’s Bone earned her an Academy Award nomination. To get the job for Winter’s Bone, Jennifer auditioned twice in California. Determined to win the role, she flew to New York to audition a third time. She won the part that required her to learn to shoot a gun and skin a squirrel. Playing down her prettiness, and rarely wearing make-up, Jennifer even had her teeth painted yellow to portray her character. Then came roles as Mystique in X-Men: First Class, and her most famous role as Katniss. In between the sequels to Hunger Games, Jennifer worked on other films, winning an Academy Award for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook. Although famous and talented, Jennifer wants to be a hard-working, girl-next-door kind of person who relies on pluck, not luck. Some movies mentioned may not be appropriate for younger audiences. Copious photos make Jennifer! a fun read; although, it would be nice to see pictures of Jennifer in costume as well. This entertaining celebrity biography will capture adolescent interest and provide suitable nonfiction material for classroom and personal reading. Part of the “Sizzling Celebrities” series. Reviewer: Kate Szegda; Ages 8 to 12.

Just saw Carching Fire and i was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I was truly on the edge of tears. Everytime Jennifer cried i wanted to and it takes a real talented actor to make me cry. I always thought the Twilight saga was better but based on Carching Fire i am saying they are at least tied if the Hunger Games isnt better. Saw the first one too but i didnt read any of the books and based on Jennifer's performance you can bet that i am going to at least read Mockingjay. I love Jennifer so much she truly is a role model for everybody.
