Overview

On March 17, 2011, social media channels buzzed with excitement. Fans of The Hunger Games had hotly debated which actors would bring their beloved characters to life in the upcoming movie. The movie's director, Gary Ross, had finally selected the lead character, Katniss. His pick: Jennifer Lawrence.

Jennifer started acting professionally in 2004 at age fourteen. But she quickly proved her major talent. For the 2008 movie The Burning Plain, she earned a best new young actress award at the Venice Film Festival. And for her performance in the 2010 movie Winter's Bone, Jennifer received nominations for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.

The Hunger Games's author, Suzanne Collins, celebrated the selection of Katniss. "I never thought we'd find somebody this amazing for the role," she said. And Jennifer—who is a huge fan of the books—was thrilled to play such a complex character. Did she pull it off? Fans will be the judge!

Children's Literature - Tina Chan
Fans of the movie The Hunger Games will recognize actor Jennifer Lawrence as the character Katniss Everdeen. This biography chronicles Lawrence's life, from her childhood in Louisville, Kentucky to her Hollywood life. From an early age, Lawrence knew she wanted to be an actor. At fourteen, she convinces her mother to take her to New York City during spring break to apply to modeling and acting agencies. While in New York City's Union Square watching a commercial being filmed, a talent agent asks to take her picture and asks for her phone number. The talent agent calls her the next day and asks her to audition. Lawrence ends up staying in New York City for two months and signs with a talent agent, while completing photo shoots and acting roles. At the end of the summer, Lawrence returns to home to Kentucky, with no intentions of leaving acting. She rises to fame with her role in TBS's The Bill Engvall Show. During this time, she and her family move to California so Lawrence can be closer to work. With Lawrence's numerous acting awards and nominations, she has emerged in the acting profession as a talented and accomplished actor. For preteens and early teenagers who want to know more about Lawrence, this book will give readers an inside story about her rise to stardom. Reviewer: Tina Chan

Gr 4–8—This biography begins, "Dear Readers: We have found Katniss,' announced Suzanne Collins." The movie based on the "Hunger Games" trilogy brought questions of who will play the beloved main character, and the answer is a beautiful Kentuckian with loads of talent. Lawrence has proven to be an up-and-coming talent, with nominations for the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. The book is formatted chronologically and begins with Lawrence getting a start in her career at 14 and evolving quickly into a professional actress. A mix of quotations and full-color photographs keeps readers' interest piqued.—Rachel Artley, Watertown Elementary School, TN
