Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cathi I. White
Jeremy Bean has to find a collection to take to school. No ordinary collection like rocks, stamps, or coins will do. It has to be unusual. He thinks about collecting eggs, cookies, or hats. But they will not do either. He tries to collect shoes until his mother stops him. Finally, after talking to his Gramps, he comes up with the best kind of collection there is. Wait until the kids at school find out about his unique collection. This story and two others will keep young readers wondering what Jeremy is up to next. Have you ever heard of feeding dust bunnies? Well, Jeremy tries to do that by leaving food in his room. He also does some strange things, like wearing a lampshade on his head and hiding under a blanket to catch a dust bunny. He is determined to keep one as a pet. He is shocked when a dust bunny tries to catch him. The last story is about St. Patrick's Day at Jeremy's school. Everyone celebrates and makes a big deal out of the holiday. When Jeremy forgets his sweater, he is teased by his classmates. When he is embarrassed and tries to run from the problem he is helped by someone whom he did not expect. Children will be entertained by the imagination and creativity in this book. The illustrations are well done, realistic, and add to the tone of each story. This funny book would be a great addition to any classroom. Reviewer: Cathi I. White
School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—Three short stories introduce Jeremy Bean. He is frustrated because he can't come up with a collection that no other kid has until his grandfather gives him inspiration, he tries to capture the elusive "dust bunnies" and ends up getting a real pet, and forgets to wear green on St. Patrick's Day. Jeremy tries to do his best but sometimes his best gets him into silly and not-so-silly situations, like being locked in the janitor's closet. Youngsters will empathize with the everyday occurrences in these funny, totally childlike tales. Slonim's black-and-white cartoon illustrations capture the flavor of the stories and feature a boy with wide eyes and freckles. A fine choice for beginning-chapter-book collections.—Carrie Rogers-Whitehead, Kearns Library, UT
Kirkus Reviews
A school assignment to share collections prompts Jeremy Bean to become a collector of stories about himself, which he hopes he can share with his grandchildren as his Gramps has shared stories with him. This engaging transitional work is organized into three "books" that explore Jeremy's efforts to become a collector, his search for dust bunnies and his solution to the problem of a St. Patrick's Day costume (a slightly revised version of Jeremy Bean's St. Patrick's Day, illustrated by Linda Shute, 1987). Each section is further divided into chapters, providing good breaks in the reading, but the narrative contains enough tension to keep readers going. Jeremy cleverly solves his own problems, but he gets help from two supportive older males, his grandfather and a not-so-scary-after-all principal. Librarians will welcome the return of this popular character. Simple straightforward sentences and regular repetition of words help chapter-book readers, who will find Jeremy's world familiar and his stories appealing; Slonim's cheerful grey-scale illustrations appear on every page, ranging in size and scale and adding extra humor. Here's hoping Jeremy will soon collect some more. (Fiction. 5-8)
