Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Jeremy Lin's basketball success and his journey to achieve it are described in this unauthorized biography. Lin became famous in the sports world when he played for the New York Knicks and outscored Kobe Bryant in a game against the L.A. Lakers in 2012. The book discusses his family, particularly his parents' move from Taiwan to California before Jeremy and his brothers were born. Several chapters tell about his childhood experiences learning basketball and eventually playing in college. Lin was exposed to some racism over the years, but learned to not let it affect him. There are lots of details about high-profile games, particularly a famous game against the Lakers. Lin has become famous as a role model for Asian Americans as well as for Asian youth. Throughout the book, Buckley incorporates quotations from Jeremy and those associated with him. Coaches and trainers explain how Jeremy's talents help him succeed. Buckley also includes facts titled "Hoops Talk," which add basic information such as the definitions of a point guard, shooting guard, and pick-and-roll. Another "Hoops Talk" discusses Lin's role as a basketball pioneer. There are several photographs of Jeremy in action from the cover through the book. An uplifting story of praise for Jeremy's accomplishments, this book should be of interest to young basketball lovers and those who are looking for a lively biography. Reviewer: Vicki Foote

    ~Republic City's Rising~ An Avatar Fanfiction- Chapter 1

Aang walked through the pristine new streets of Republic City. It was a city formed of his own imagination. Now the world could live side by side, in peace. Tranquility. Harmony. All was well.

Meanwhile, Toph Beifong hung her head while sitting on her rumpled bed. Tears cascaded down her face as she shook. She must be strong. The Commander of the MetalBender Army shan't cry! Toph couldn't see the lump in her womb, yet she heard the heartbeat, felt the baby inside of her slosh around. How did she get a child? She wasn't even married, and only had s*x with the Duke once! She heard her armor clang to the floor. Toph got up, slipped her armor on, tied her hair up, and wiped away her tears-a sign of weakness.

Katara yawned. Boy, it had been a long day in the Air Temple. With Kya and Bumi bouncing around, with Tenzin constantly wailing for milk, it was a mother's wits end. Kya pranced about the hallways, strewing streams of water along them. "Momma, momma, I can waterbend!" She boasted. Her long dark hair twirled and bounced around. Bumi tagged along, his eyes capturing the same glee- though he couldn't bend, he proudly wielded a wooden sword, lugging it across the floor. Katara admired the spirit in her children, bender or non-bender.

Sokka sat in the army tent with the other warriors, chilling with some traditional water tribe delicacies, (some meat, Sokka's gotta have that) and a warm cup of tea. He rolled out his scroll, upon which he had described battle plans. "We strike from behind, adding the element of suprise, and then strike swift and fast. Understand, men?" He says, quite seriously, while shoving food down his piehole. (LOL) His gaze wanders off. He missed Katara, his old pal Aang, even.... Toph. He missed her in a way that he couldn't explain. But he would see her soon, when he returns to Republic City to serve as Councilman of the Republic City Council. For that, he was grateful. Sokka returned to his battle plans.

Soon, paths will cross again, and the Gaang will face a threat worse than before, with love and humor along the way. Yep, that's Avatar for you.
