Ben Bagley's "revisited" albums tend to be devoted to the otherwise obscure compositions of Broadway songwriters, sung by talented but lesser known Broadway performers. Jerome Kern Revisited, however, displays some more celebrated songs and singers than usual. There may be no real big hits among the selections, but especially because Bagley has chosen to include some songs Kern wrote for movie musicals, there are a few that many people might be familiar with. Jerome Kern Revisited, however, displays some more celebrated songs and singers than usual. There may be no real big hits among the selections, but especially because Bagley has chosen to include some songs Kern wrote for movie musicals, there are a few that many people might be familiar with. In particular, "Bojangles of Harlem" and "Never Gonna Dance," both performed by Fred Astaire in the 1936 film Swing Time, may be recognized, and "I Have the Room Above," written for the 1936 movie version of Show Boat, also enjoyed wide exposure. At the same time, Bagley's cast of five singers boasts a couple whose names are known well beyond Broadway. Bobby Short is a top nightclub entertainer, and Barbara Cook may owe her renown to Broadway, but she has been a star (Candide, The Music Man, She Loves Me) long enough to be more generally known. Still, the album certainly doesn't rank as anything like an "all-star" Kern "hits" collection by any means. There are plenty of songs plucked from forgotten shows like Very Warm for May and Music in the Air, songs boasting clever lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II or Ira Gershwin in addition to typically attractive Kern melodies. And the performers -- who also include Nancy Andrews, Harold Lang, and Cy Young -- perform them enthusiastically over sympathetic arrangements by Norman Paris. So, this is a typical Bagley effort in that it shines a light on little-known but effective songs performed by obscure but talented singers. It's just that there are some welcome ringers mixed in. The album was released originally on Columbia Records in 1965. When Bagley came to reissue it on his own Painted Smiles label, he mixed in four new tracks, all performed by soap opera star (and minor stage performer) George Reinholt, with piano accompaniment by Judd Woldin: "Didn't You Believe?" from the 1921 musical Good Morning Dearie; "Just Let Me Look at You" from the 1938 movie Joy of Living; "Cinderella Sue" from the 1946 movie Centennial Summer; and "Love and the Moon" from the 1922 play Rose Briar. Reinholt had a pure, sincere tenor ideal for the childlike tone of "Didn't You Believe?" and "Cinderella Sue," and "Love and the Moon" was interesting in that it boasted a credible lyric by novelist Booth Tarkington, who wrote the play. In 1990, the album was expanded again for CD reissue. Seven years earlier, Bagley had put out second, third, and fourth volumes of Kern rarities on LP. For CDs, he reshuffled their contents to make up three discs. In the case of this first volume, he added six songs that had appeared on the fourth LP: "That Lucky Fellow," "The Shorty George," and "What's Good About Good Night?," performed by Rod McKuen; "This Is Opening Night," performed by Kaye Ballard with a chorus; "April Fooled Me," performed by Henrietta Valor; and "Cover Girl," performed by a chorus. McKuen, as usual, relied on his phrasing to overcome his hoarse, limited singing, but remained an acquired taste. "The Shorty George," another song introduced by Astaire in the movies, was better known than the others, but certainly the most surprising find is the rousing "Tonight Is Opening Night." Hearing a lyric that mentioned South Pacific was a shock since that musical opened four years after Kern's death in 1945. But it turned out the song contained a melody taken from an earlier number with a new lyric written by Dorothy Fields for the 1952 film Lovely to Look At, and then cut from that.
