School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2 Jerome is broke. His sister, Winifred, tells him to get a babysitting job, but employment opportunities are few for a young alligator. When Mrs. Gatorman, mother of a particularly difficult bunch of children, calls for a sitter, Winifred ``allows'' Jerome to take the job. He finds 12 active charges who proceed to create havoc for Jerome. They offer him a piece of candy from a box filled with frogs; give him a chair with no seat; fill the bathroom with soap bubbles; lure him out on to the roof of their house and remove the ladder. A passing policeman gets Jerome down, almost arresting him as a burglar, and Jerome gets his revenge on his charges. All of the characters are delightful alligators in varying shades of green, with expressive faces. The brightly colored illustrations add just the right touch of humor. The text reads well, and should make Jerome as popular as Christelow's ``Henry'' ( Henry and the Red Stripes 1982, Henry and the Dragon 1984, both Clarion). A good choice for story times or for individual reading. Lisa Redd, Metropolitan Library System, Oklahoma City
