Jerry Rice

Children's Literature - Tiffany Torbeck
Students wanting to know an overwhelming amount of statistics will be pleased with this mid-level biography of Jerry Rice. The book opens by explaining Rice's position as one of football's greatest players, then goes on to give a short description of his childhood, but more specifically his college football career. The stats come fast and furious after that. From his days at Mississippi Valley State University to the San Francisco 49ers working with Joe Montana and Steve Young, then on to the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks. This book chronicles Rice's football career very well, all the while stating that his success was due to his determination and drive. While Rice is portrayed in a pleasing light, the book does mention his demand for perfection even in his team uniforms, changing into a clean uniform at halftime. While his professional life is well-documented in this book, his personal life is left on the sidelines. Readers will not feel that they have gained much insight into Rice's upbringing and life outside football. Even quotes from his autobiography relate only to football. This title is a benefit to collections since it will draw in readers with fast-paced writing about exciting football games. The text includes a timeline, glossary, bibliography and further reading suggestions, including websites, which all worked at the time of review. Reviewer: Tiffany Torbeck
