Overview

The Jersey Effect takes a look into the hearts and minds of athletes who achieved Super Bowl success and examines the battles they faced. It presents the stories of champions who desired to reflect glory back to God by using their “jersey” and the platform God gave them to make a positive difference in the world. Even so, sometimes their great intentions were hijacked by pride, materialism, distractions, and deficiencies within their own character that were never truly understood until the ultimate success came their way. Intended for players, coaches, and parents who want to learn and in turn teach important lessons about how to properly align a love of sports with God’s heart, The Jersey Effect demonstrates how to pursue the ultimate prize—a goal that has little to do with winning a championship ring and everything to do with how we can have a positive effect on those around us through the sports we love.

Meet the Author

Hunter Smith is a unique blend of performing artist and professional athlete. He’s a committed Christian, twelve-year NFL veteran, Super Bowl champion, public speaker, worship leader, pastor, Billboard top 20 Christian AC singer/songwriter, renowned storyteller, and most recently author of The Jersey Effect. He chose the University of Notre Dame and played for head coach Lou Holtz and was drafted by and played for the Indianapolis Colts for ten seasons. Darrin Gray has a unique window into the National Football League by virtue of his day-to-day involvement with All Pro Dad, Family First’s national fatherhood program cofounded by Tony Dungy and Clyde Christensen. Darrin interacts with NFL athletes, coaches, and alumni who serve as spokesmen for All Pro Dad, and has conducted programs with over half of the NFL franchises. He conceptualized The Jersey Effect years ago when he wondered what motivated some athletes like Tony Dungy to use their professional platform in sports, their jersey, to make a positive impact both on and off the field.

The "Jersey Effect" is a great book that goes beyond the game of football. Each of us wear a jersey in some fashion, whether its in sports, at work, or at home. This book challenges each of us to look at how we are being used by God in this game of life. I enjoyed the stories from each of the players and coaches that were highlighted in the book. They are real people with real struggles in a society that wants to elevate them to a pedestal. Thank you for your insight and encouragement to keep sports in their proper perspective.

"The Jersey Effect" is a sports-focused book, but the themes and messages inside are applicable for Christians in any career. "The Jersey Effect" discusses how to deal with success in your career along with all the pitfalls and temptations the world will offer. I was encouraged to see the vulnerability and read about the struggles these standout professional athletes allowed the public to see, especially in a profession that values the public image so highly. The book's format is easy to read with each chapter being a snapshot of how Colts' players used their platform/jersey in the game's highest stage to struggle and grow in their daily walk with Christ. Overall, this is a great book for anyone that's ever battled with the temptations of the world and finding one's true value in God alone. Great read!

I loved Hunter Smith's transparency and his personal authenticity in the letters to his teammates... it was awesome that NFL insiders like Tony Dungy, Jeff Saturday, etc. were willing to share their faith-full stories about thier NFL journey. Powerful words are still ringing in my ears... deep messages about how to keep sports in proper perspective.
