Editorial Reviews

When does a political uprising cross the line from freedom fight to violent terrorism? What lies at the root of these centuries-old conflicts? This series of books will answer these and many other tough questions. In covering such a broad subject, it would be easy to lapse into a dry record of dates, skirmishes, and borders, but Katz keeps the material interesting with a variety of tidbits. Firsthand accounts of raids and many black-and-white photographs add interest. A word of caution, however, is that the photos depict real terrorist situations: Devastated city streets, shrouded martyrs and innocent victims, protests, and demonstrations. The faces of some of the main characters in these dramatic stories bring the larger-than-life stories to an understandable level. Each "Terrorist Dossiers" series book is written in a similar format, with a glossary up front to introduce some key terms and then a detailed but readable historical perspective of each conflict. Although Jerusalem or Death covers the Palestinian conflict exclusively, At Any Cost gives accounts of four well-known insurgencies including the Irish Republican Army and the Kurdistan Workers Party. Series titles Raging Within and Jihad cover conflicts stemming from similar ideologies. Those who are willing to digest the considerable information offered in each chapter will be rewarded with a thorough understanding of an incredibly dense topic. The conclusion of each book shows a time line along with resources for further study and a detailed index. This series provides a wealth of information, but the subject matter and accompanying illustrations might be a bit much for less mature readers. Gr 9 Up-These books address different groups with various motivations for their violent attacks. At Any Cost explains the history of terrorism by groups seeking liberation of their homeland. Covering the Irish Republican Army, the Basques in northeastern Spain, the Kurds in Iraq, and the Tigers of Sri Lanka, the author attempts too much in one small volume. Jerusalem covers the Arab-Israeli conflict from the beginning to present. The somewhat confusing factions such as the PLO, the DFLP, and the IDF are still confusing, even with a "Who's Who" at the beginning of the book. The history and evolution of terrorism in the Middle East, however, is outlined in chronological order, clearly explaining the religious and political views of the Palestinians and the Jews. Each volume includes black-and-white photographs, a time line, and an epilogue outlining the current state of political unrest in each country. Combining facts and statistics with up-close accounts of terrorist activity provides students with an overall understanding of the political and personal repercussions of these violent acts.-Julie Webb, Shelby County High School, Shelbyville, KY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
