Children's Literature
Jerusalem, located in an area called the Judean Hills, is the capital of the country of Israel. Unlike many cities Jerusalem did not develop because of natural geographical features, such as being near a water source or offering fertile planting land that would make it a desirable settlement location. Instead, Jerusalem developed because it was the religious center of three of the world's major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jerusalem is often called the world's most holy city. Nevertheless, the city is not without controversy among religious groups. Portions of Jerusalem have often been the object of wars between neighboring countries: One of the most religious structures in the Islamic faith occupies the same space that once held a religious structure important to the Judaic and Christian faiths. Chapters about Jerusalem's different cultures will enable the reader to understand how all of these faiths are important to Jerusalem's heritage. Photographs of outdoor markets and school children are mixed with archival photos and fact boxes to give the reader information about the city and its development. Supplemental pages include a glossary, an index, recommended web sites, and a timeline. This is an excellent resource for the middle school collection. This book is part of the "Great Cities of the World" series, which currently includes thirty titles. 2005, World Almanac Library/Gareth Stevens, Ages 10 up.

Gr 3-6-These attractive, informative overviews are up-to-date through early 2005. The topics covered include geography, culture, work, play, history, and religion. Graphs, color photographs, sidebars, and quotes are well placed to add visual interest and more information. The concluding chapter in each book discusses hopes and concerns. These cities are in countries currently struggling with war and governmental issues, but the authors remain straightforward and objective. The titles are better organized and more current than those in the "Great Cities" series (Rosen) and are solid choices for students seeking material for reports.-Peg Glisson, Mendon Center Elementary School, Pittsford, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
