GREAT(x3) GRANDMA COOK IS DOCUMENTED IN THIS BOOK. WHAT A FANTASTIC FIND. MY BROTHER AND I ENJOY THE FAMILY HISTORY SEARCH TOGETHER. OUR GRANDMA ZOLA SHULTS WAS A GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER OF JANE(WIDOW) COOK. GRANDMA SHULTS WOULD INSTILL IN EACH OF US IN SEMI-SECRET THE STORY SHE WAS TOLD BY HER GREAT GRANDMOTHER AND ALSO INBETWEEN GENERATIONS OF THE INFAMOUS VISIT FROM THE JAMES BAND. THE STORY BY THAT TIME HAD EVOLVED INTO TO A BIT TO INCREDIBLE TO BELIEVE BY THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE SO GRANDMA WAS A BIT COVERT IN MAKING SURE WE UNDERSTOOD IT WAS IN FACT TRUE. IN OUR YOUTH EVERYBODY AND THEIR BROTHER WAS TELLING A SIMILAR STORY PRETTY MUCH COMPROMISING THE ACTUAL HISTORY OF THE EVENT. WHEN MY BROTHER FOUND AND THUMBED THROUGH THE BOOK TOTALLY BY CHANCE MANY YEARS AFTER OUR GRANDMA ZOLA'S DEATH, IT WAS TRULLY A GIFT FROM HEAVEN. THE LIST OF REFERENCES ALLOWED US TO ACTUALLY FIND THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLES OF THE DAY AND NOW ARE INCLUDED IN OUR DOCUMENTATION. WE ALSO HAVE LOCATED THE HOMEPLACE WHERE THIS EVENT TOOK PLACE AND VISIT THERE OFTEN. WE FEEL LIKE WHAT SAVED AND COMMITTED THE EVENT TO PRINT WAS THE FACT THAT GRANDMA COOK'S HOUSEHOLD WAS UNION. THERE WERE VERY VERY FEW HOUSEHOLDS ALONG THE RIVER IN THAT AREA THAT WERE UNION AND THE JAMES BAND MANAGED TO PICK ONE. MANY YEARS LATER A NIECE OF GRANDMA COOK, WHOSE FAMILY HAD BEEN CONFEDERATE GAVE AN INTERVIEW THAT SAID THOSE ASSOCIATED WITH THE JAMES GROUP MADE SOME STOPS ON OCCASSION IN THE AREA. SO WE KINDA FEEL LIKE FINDING THIS INFORMATION NOT ONLY SUBSTANTIATES OUR FAMILY HISTORY BUT SUBSTANTIATES EVERYONES. TRULY TRULY A FANTASTIC FIND REALLY APPRECIATE THE AUTHORS WORK AND MAKING SUCH A TREASURE AVAILABLE TO US. THIS BOOK WAS PURCHASED TO GIVE TO DISTANT COUSIN WITH THE HOPE OF CONNECTING AND PRESERVING WITH OTHER BRANCHES OF GRANDMA COOKS CHILDREN WITH AND TO THIS WONDERFUL FAMILY HISTORY.Was this review helpful? This book covers everything about the robbery. Whether you are a fan or not of Jesse James and the Younger Gang you will find the reading delightful. It is enjoyable and keeps your attention throughout. The author did a lot of research made personal interviews with some of the people still living and edited it continually for years to make certain the details were accurate. I should know I am very proud to say I am his sister and he allowed me to help with some of the research. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Great Book! Not a tired rehash of what others have written. Author's diligent research gives us a refreshing account of the Gad's Hill, Missouri train robbery. Included is a fine selection of photographs of the sites involved, both period and now. A must have for anyone interested in the James Gang. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
